Similar to the rotation video we posted, https://youtu.be/MBcLbIqYUUA what you do in the setup or backswing or before you make your downswing is incredibly important and has a big influence on your downswing.

To shallow out your downswing, when you make a backswing there is an equal and opposite effect. When you go back, the more you go vertical the easier it will be to shallow out coming down.

The right arm and shoulder are the second piece here. If you play other sports – baseball, tennis or football – the right arm and shoulder throwing or hitting motion is pretty similar to what you want to shallow the club.

For you guys and girls that are still steep or still over the top, these are two pieces you can work that are really going to help you.

  1. Love it eric. So many teachers teaches you something else a “move in the downswing” to shallow but no body explains it like this. The vertical position of the shaft on the backswing really made me feel like my shaft is more in front of me as well. I used to get really shallow and “stuck” feeling and would have huuuge two way missed. Better connection using this method on the backswing, club is always in front of my chest and super super natural and easy to shallow without even thinking about it

  2. Sounds and looks right, looking forward to trying this out tomorrow at the range, thank you 😊

  3. I realize my backswing is really good. Where I screw up is the early release of my wrist angle,. Instead of continuing to rotate my lower body to square the club face!

It only took me 20 years to figure that out!

    Thanks Eric!

  4. Thank you for your another amazing video. I have to say I saw this video and went to practice but it didn’t work that well. And then I saw your video about the depth of the backswing and realized I focused only on the vertical part… I should still go some depth in… right? Thank you!

  5. Great video!! Super helpful! Been a struggle with my 6’5 frame shallowing out downswing. Thank you for this wonderfully simple and effective instruction and demonstration!

  6. So if I was focused on keeping my right elbow tucked and coming in to steep, could that be a major factor in shanking the ball?

  7. Just practised this in my lounge room it feels right but that's not what everyone teaches. This could just work you take it back steep the clubhead is outside the hands it can't go anywhere else and then when you come down it shallows it can't go anywhere else either. Is it shallow enough though? Driving range tomorrow to find out. Jim fuyrik swing maybe.

  8. I've been way overthinking this concept, I'm a good golfer (about a 9 hc) but I way over analyze things and have have way too many details i think about during my swing…literally all I did was watch this video, made my backswing more vertical then tried to hit the inside bottom of the ball with a full rotation through…ball flight fixed, thanks eric

  9. Just a brilliant video. I’ve been struggling with this, looking forward to the drills tomorrow

  10. Hi Eric, fantastic instruction as usual! May I ask plse, reference the external rotation of the trail shoulder in the downswing, will this happen naturally if you can somehow get the shaft vertical, or have you got to consciously make it happen?
    Cheers

  11. Just found this video. I was hitting really bad in the beginning of this year, so went to a video lesson with a place near me, and they had me change my more vertical swing path to a more flat one. I lost a lot of distance in my driver and my irons, but I was striking the ball better. Fast forward a couple months, I realized through YouTube teachers like yourself that my vertical style swing was great for shoulder turn and distance. I went back and watched the video and turned out I was really, REALLY swaying left to right in my backswing, so I hardly ever came back to a good spot to hit the ball. Now I am finally back to my old swing, just not moving my darn body and head so much. I'm 45 and hit several drives tonight 290+ right down the middle. Finally starting to get back to playing actual golf. I did need to see my swing and what I was doing wrong, but I didn't need to listen to the flat rotation swing advice. I couldn't tell how much I was swaying, but that was all I needed to fix! Took 2 months to get myself right again. Great video!

  12. Stumbled upon the “intentional” flying right elbow at address and into backswing earlier this summer at the range. My pro and i couldn’t understand why this worked to really flush it – this video solved the mystery!!!

  13. Did you take down the video of you teaching the kid indoors how to do opposite on the way back gets you shallow on the way down? I need to watch it again. Great video
