Hey guys, in this video you’re going to see one of the bunker videos from our cogornogolf.com premium membership. So, this is one of the videos you get with a paid membership. It’s part of a bigger course that we did to get out of the bunker. We wanted you guys to see this first one just to get started with the setup.
The bunker shot is the only shot in golf that I’m hitting where I’m not actually trying to hit the ball first. I’m trying to hit the sand behind the ball. The setup is based around that.
What you should notice first is my feet are a lot wider than normal. Out of a bunker, my ankles are much wider than my shoulders. I’m also sitting into my stance a little bit more than normal. I’m very bent down into my knees and I’m sitting. I’m sitting on a horse as the sensation here.
In terms of the weight in my feet, I’m going to have more weight forward, kind of pressed into my left quad, maybe up to 70 or 80 percent of my weight and my pressure is going to be in that lead leg. So feet are wide. I’m sitting down, my knees are bent, and I’ve got a lot of pressure into that lead leg, so that’s the main piece with my lower body.
In terms of my upper body, I see a lot of people go wrong with the spine angle. I want the spine angle to be straight up and down, were even slightly leaning towards the target. I’m trying to preset steep setup pieces out of the bunker so I can be shallow with my swing. So, in terms of my shoulders, I’m not going to be tilted to the right at all. I’m going to maybe have my left shoulder a little bit lower than my right shoulder and my left hip a little bit lower than my right. I’m presetting myself a little bit more forward.
In my setup, my club face is going to be quite a bit open. If I were to draw a line, sort of down the leading edge of my club, the clubs angled essentially where the front part of the club is open to the point where it’s at or just slightly forward of my left toe.
Next up is ball position. I like to have the ball in the middle or slightly forward of middle for a stock bunker shot. So, if you were to see from face on relative to my stance, that ball position’s going to be just a little bit inside of my left heel for a stock setup.
That would be my stock set up. My feet are nice and wide. My knees are bent. I’m leaning into my left quad. My upper body is tilted a little bit forward. My left shoulder, a little bit lower than my right. My club face is open.

Great work here. Love how you always give the “why” behind what you’re trying to achieve. Super helpful
I am a 4 handicap and bunker play is the weakness in my game. I seen from this video one change I have to make and that is a wider stance, I have been trying to hit bunker shots as if I was chipping meaning a narrow stance. Thanks for this instruction.
Eric, can you explain how to hit a full shot out of a fairway bunker?
Do you also open the club face in wet bunkers?
Whenever I open the face in wet bunkers, I usually blade the top of the ball.
It feels like the wedge bounces off the wet (harder) sand too early.
Notice after your shot, the deepest part of the divot, is in front of the ball….Video was great…
4 sandies today (two rounds mind you!) using this set up…took 2 rounds prior to get comfortable, but once I did it’s almost automatic
Another really helpful video with 'reality'. Can I ask Eric, when you talk of leaning towards the target and L/shoulder being lower than right, I presume this is just a feeling, and additionally when you say about the shaft being more upright, the same applies. I mention it because when I freeze impact one can clearly see your r/shoulder is lower than your left, your spine is tilted away from target and your hands are ahead of the ball.
Like you said 'there are no rules' in that if it works and one can repeat it successfully then 'that's it'. I tried Nick Faldo's tip of placing ball off left heel, but found I was entering the sand 6-8 or more behind the ball (early release) and resulting in the ball still being in the bunker. I then tried placing the ball 2-4 inches in front of where I entered the sand, which was just in front of the centre of my stance and this worked with about 75% success. I think I'll try your advice of opening the face even more and see how this works for me.
Great video tip! I tried your system and l must say it really work. I just need more time to ingrain it in my muscle memory. Unlike other coach(es )who claims their system is a perfect bunker shot, but opposite in reality. Wish l knew yours years ago. Your system whatever that may be truly work. Thanks.
Hi Eric, when playing a bunker shot, does one arm feel more dominant than the other on the follow through. Also are your eyes just focusing on one spot the whole time when you follow through. Cheers
Well done Eric..
Like it: Loved it! So well explained – thanks Eric, appreciate your work.
lol this is a great instructional video, that being said the camera aperture makes you look hilariously tiny like someone shrunk you in the bunker!
hi Eric, when the face is open, does that mean ur still aiming the face at the target and adjusting your body? or is the face aimed well right of the pin as well?
also, i know in the rough we are swinging on a steeper plane. what about on a greenside bunker and fairway bunker swing plane? thx!
Hey Eric, top video as always. Where are you aiming, as your stance looks open and your club face is too?
Eric, you are right up the with Martin Chuck, Michael Breed and Mike Malaska who, to me, are legends.
Thanks for sharing your content with us on YouTube. You have helped clear so many cobwebs in my brain over the past few months.

One thing that I noticed immediately between your regular and bunker set up that you didn't mention was that in your bunker set up your front foot is almost completely sideways.
No one tells those of us why we blade or thin one over the green…
Ett jättetack för bra tipps
Awesome that bunker set up something to work on. I love your all video specially your wedges info and put it all together and my game a lot better. Thanks a lot ⛳️👍✌️good day
Hi Eric…what about not having the right hand turn over in the downswing? Thanks. Gerry
you are the effing man! love from New England.
Your whole set looks like a chip shot. Are u suppose to hit down or scooping the ball from sand?
Best online instruction out there.
Eric leaves no stone left unturned while still keeping things as simple as possible.
If I'm using a 60degree out of the sand, should the face angle still trace outside my left foot? Or be a bit more closed?
