The DGPT has acquired Jomez Pro in a massive step towards consolidation in disc golf media. As of right now, the Jomez Pro website and YouTube channel will continue to operate as usual. The sale stems from a 2022 deal that committed Jomez to pay $500,000 to the DGPT for the rights to lead card post-production over 2 years. We took a look at the structure of the deal, the events that preceded it, and what this means for the future of disc golf media.

I can see the benefits for DGPT and Jomez, but I guess all in all it's bad news for other media-outlets in de discgolfscene. Logical at a certain point, it happens in all sports, but there you'll see that other companies will broadcast other leagues in other countries. I don't see that happening here, because the two biggest cups are both owned or algined with the PDGA (DGPT and EuroTour) and the bigger broadcasters are based in the USA anyways. I do look forward to seeing JomezPro commentary in the live-broadcast and having more camera's on course that also do live, not just recording.
I think you've got it backwards here man. DGPT charged 500k for lead card coverage, edited publishing next day, etc., and that number just makes no fucking sense. The DGPT itself probably barely makes $1-3 mil. per year in subscriptions, tickets, and merch sales. If I recall correctly, their sub price is 12.99/month, so for a year it's 155.88 without any discount for paying a year at a time or using your PDGA membership subscription. I've heard that about 10k people are watching the paywalled last round streams, so that means on subs alone they make about $1.6 mil. Let's be generous and say that another $1.5 mil. is made from tickets and merch (which is almost surely an overestimate), and $1.5 mil. in advertisements and brand deals (which is also almost surely an overestimate). That means that DGPT is making $4.6 mil per year given a very liberal estimate.
That means that DGPT was asking for more than 10% of their revenue as the price for Jomez. That's pretty much an uncalled for price for any sport at any level for just one broadcaster. Not ESPN, Fox, NBC, or Youtube pay an equivalent of 10% of the NFL, NBA, or NHL's yearly revenue for broadcasting rights (don't know about PGA golf because it's a less lucrative broadcast sport). Why the hell would DGPT, the smallest of peanuts in the pro sports world, intentionally and confidently ask for more than market price from Jomez?? I think it's because they knew that Jomez only survives if they have those broadcasting rights, so they can charge above market value to them. Truthfully I'd imagine the rate Gatekeeper is charged is probably also above market rate. This is a case of DGPT overcharging Jomez with likely the express intention of then acquiring them by debt down the road so that they can control Jomez however they see fit to maximize their own bottom line. It's not DGPT being nice and trying to support a legend in the scene. It's just another case of forced takeover, like every other industry does.
Eventually DGPT will convince enough pro disc golf watchers that it’s actually good to paywall all forms of non-highlight coverage, including post production, and pro disc golf fandom will shrink but DGPT will make more money because that smaller base will be paying more than what the larger base is paying currently. We all know that the average pro disc golf watcher currently doesn’t produce much revenue for the DGPT, so the DGPT has a strong financial incentive to shrink the fandom and increase the amount the average fan pays for coverage and content because that will likely be a better way to increase its financial viability. It’s obvious that the financialization of everything disc golf is basically in direct opposition to long term growth and access to the sport overall.
Jomez Pro’s 2022 deal wasn’t for first round coverage rights for MPO and FPO. It was for full event coverage (all rounds) only for MPO.
With no insult, the FPO was the the big mishap this year. Just look, every year previous was just MPO coverage.
Feels like DGPT basically shook down Jomez like they are the big, bad mafia.
DGPT is gunna turn into the NCAA driven by greed and many people get screwed over because of the greed
They are G0NA TURN W0KE !!! Mark my statement
The DGPT essentially did a mob tactic on a YouTube channel with 3x the subs. Either get them out or get them in debt and squeeze them to sell.
What they charged was obscene and the option was either comply and die trying to pay it or fold because you can't film the sport your channel is built around.
DGPT got exactly what they wanted. Hopefully Jomez and their best production quality and outstanding personalities survive it.
I'm generally positive about this development, though I can't help but think DGPT's pricing was predatory and forced Jomez to sign a deal it couldn't refuse. I do see the possibility for improvement for both DGN and JomezPro coverage, but how they got to this point was probably closer to a hostile takeover than a mutually beneficial agreement.
Best (really only) live coverage now packaged with the best post coverage is good for the sport. Being able to package jomez using more resources is a GOOD thing. Seeing the awesome Jomez commentary potentially move over to more DGN events would also be a good thing.
Drinking the Kool-Aid looking at this as a good thing. What a disaster.
Well, maybe the prior 500 k deal was a "work" to be acquired and have someone else take the overhead ! lol.
Jeez, another example of "what in the hell is this guy telling private legal information to the public for???"
How do you think DGPT/Jomez acquisition will effect media professionals trying to get a job in disc golf? Will it bring more job opportunities or do you think DGPT could be "overstaffed"?
rip to the small business 😢
This is bad for disc golf viewers. With DGPT owning Jomez, there's no reason for them to deal with other content producers like Central Coast Disc Golf, or Gatekeeper Media. DGPT can essentially drive them out of business through exclusivity for Jomez, and in turn drive viewers to Jomez through lack of viewing options. Once DGPT consolidates the viewership through Jomez, they can then start charging whatever they want for access to content.
The change will be the same like when bands sell out such as U2 or Metallica when they went “corporate”… just wait and see how it all plays out 😂
What will this mean for DGN? If anything?
My thinking is they strung them along KNOWING they would have a financial crush and then proceeded to acquire what they needed. People were leaving DGN because of no off-season content. They did ok with some series lines but nothing really eye catching for most. So now they got Jomez to fill that spot. Hopefully all the other dg content creators will learn from Jomez’s mistakes and not over-expand
I watch Jomez on YouTube almost every tournament they film. I think if DGPT slowly changes Jomez operations, they will gain support from Jomez viewers but if they make quick changes there is potential for Jomez viewers to dislike DGPT which would be a lost opportunity for them to gain popularity.
There was a noticeable (first ever) backstep in Jomez quality this year with the camera operators. Now I know why.
Maybe this is an exception but in general I'm really sick of company mergers/acquisitions and control being focused in the hands of fewer people. Especially done under the guise that "nothing has changed".
Jomez provides a service to grow disc golf.. DGPT charges them more to record the coverage than they can afford, so now DGPT takes all the assets and property of Jomez. What a lose for Jomez.
Why should any of you get video coverage of professional sports for free? #asshattery abound
This is not a great thing for disc golf… its a great thing for the GDPT who can now monopolize coverage and start charging.
At first its gonna be one tournament that you have to pay to see. Then another, and another. Just wait.
Crappy change
The death of Jomez.
