In this video I will be talking about the sequence of movements from the top of the backswing into the downswing. I get a lot of questions as to what feels you need to have and what movements start first so this video will give you some great insight as to what you should be thinking about.

  1. Thanks 🙏🏻
    … excellent explanation.
I think the challenge (at least with me) is KEEPING THE HEAD STILL while shifting the left shoulder and knee ahead of where it is at setup.

Head movement is a killer in the golf swing.

  2. That was the best explanation of how to shift the weight during the transition and Great drill it's been a big problem for me. Thanks!!!! 🙂

  3. Thank you! At 43 I’m finally getting into the game of golf. I’ve watched so many YouTube videos but your videos have by far been the most helpful.

  4. Not sure what it is about your explanation style but nobody else on YouTube comes close to the way you are able to communicate with your audience. The best. Keep up the great work!

  5. Very important information video. First time I have seen this explained so clearly. And, what can happen if your starting transition incorrectly. Loved the video.

  6. Can you cover the difference in transition between iron and driver? In hitting up on the ball, with a wider stance, I often get myself hanging back. Where with a more narrow stance hitting irons I have a solid transition.

  7. Great instructions as always. What is not clear to me when you say "…the entire structure moves toward the target.." would that bring the head also forward (outside of the circle, if you draw a circle around the head at address)? , which makes keeping the head behind the ball at impact difficult? maybe the tilt would bring the head back behind from the tilt at impact?

  8. If the shoulder and knees are slightly ahead during the start of transition, how does the head remain at the same position laterally without tilt?

  9. Jonathan, absolutely great video and and simple drill to have the correct positions and feels at impact! Keep up the great work. Much appreciated. 👍😎🚴‍♂️⛹️‍♀️🤸‍♂️

  10. Jonathan your videos and instructions truly are the best on YT. I love the way you explain the more technical concepts and get the key points across so clearly. Can't wait to try some of these movements and drills.

Thanks so much for sharing and keep it up…amazing.

  11. Need to be careful doing this because it can turn into a hip slide causing all sort of issues including getting stuck. The principals of what he is explaining is on point though.

  12. So whats the reason for loading into the back foot to begin with if youre just gonna transfer the weight to the front before initiating the downswing. I assume it wouldnt add power since the transfer is initiated and finished before the rotation and arm swing. Why not just leave majority of the weight on the front foot at address and then throughout the swing?

  13. Hi Jonathan, thanks for the explanation here which has drastically improved my irons. However for the driver, this transition is causing me a lot of problems. Moving the hips laterally while keeping the head back makes hip rotation feel "stuck" and hard to square the clubface. Thoughts on this? Thanks!

  14. Hi , I’m interested in your thoughts on this teaching theory : many teachers talk about getting the wet mop lag feeling in the hands but I believe anyone can get that feeling in transition from the top which is incorrect. It is next to impossible to keep that feeling in the hands through impact if you feel for it at the top, it’s gone by halfway down . The trick is to hold the shoulder for a fraction then when the hands drop to about parallel with the ground and the arms reconnect to the half swing the wet mop feeling in the hands is then detected due to the torso now fully being powered by the turning back of the left hip.
I believe that “preached” feeling of lag (wet mop) is ruining swings as it’s easy to feel it incorrectly (eg. with an armsy swing and a loose grip sensing the club head’s weight at change of direction ) whereas the focus should be dropping the arms (passing the baton) back to the half swing plane then finding the lag sensation is not a conjured up thing it’s just there due to force on the hands being turned the body holding a club. (Once the baton is passed the sprinter takes off)
To put it simply the top of the swing back down to the half swing (parallel) is nothing more than a club slotting momentum run up to when power actually kicks in so if you are feeling lag in that area you have thrown your timing.

  15. You are excellent.
But, we need more instruction on timing. EG., When does the turn start and how to sync it with the downward movement.
    Thank you,
    Duane
