In this video, Steve talks about how perceptual errors, i.e. ‘feel vs. real’ keeps golfers from improving their swings.
Follow these tips and drills to increase clubhead speed, smash factor, driver distance, improve your golf swing, and have more FUN!

I would say the inclined plain is the source of much confusion.
When referred to in relation to a third person view of a standing human and the ground, the club goes around lower to the left.
In relation to the first person view from the eyes in an inclined head on top of an inclined body and shoulders all turning in relation to an inclined plane the club goes up in the follow through.
Both are correct from their own perspectives.
Great point, Steve. Thanks!
I think this was a Mike Austin blind spot. Muscle anatomy and physiology, golf kinesiology, and golf club physics may be good for instructors to learn, but not necessarily for the student player. In fact, it is a distraction for many students.
I walk and side- arm throw well without knowing which muscles are firing!
So true…..
"Do as I DO, not as I SAY."
I think one of the greatest examples of this is one that you used (as have many) is the hula hoop swing plane principle;
there are no two instructors that explain it the same way, but the principle and exercise/drill is one of the best analogies I have ever used in my over 40+ years of learning and playing the game.
I return that principle and exercise whenever my swing starts getting wild or uncontrollable, along with the earlier release with rotation and it ALWAYS gets me back to striking the ball better; longer, straighter and with increased club-head speed and efficiency.
The thing is, when using that drill, one simply cannot stay on plane or path (not opening up the hula hoop laterally) without engaging the pelvic rotation and "compound pivot" , which results in added leverage and speed with LESS EFFORT…
i.e. "supple quickness, not rigid slowness"
One will find that they engage their Lat's more and get more explosive power through the release.
I have gained over 40 Yards just by training my lats over the winter – along with the rest of body, but I "FEEL" lats being more engaged than I did before. Hey, 40 yrds is nothing to sneeze at, and its a good start to my journey
"to hit it longer and straighter down the fairway"
Great comparison of what Mike did vs. what he tried to describe
