Stopping in the middle to show the ref that it was a travel means you're not taking defense seriously. You have split second to defend and you waste it. Golden state went on a miraculous 14-0 run to tie it with 1:38 left, then were held to 0-3 shooting including a near turnover with 52 seconds left. As much as the narrative is that the lakers almost blew it, their response from the 1:38 mark was a 5-0 run to end the game led by their clutch defense.
