For successful sportspeople, it is often more about what they have not won rather than what they have.

Near misses and hard luck stories are just as captivating for fans as a narrative shaped around glory.

When it comes to golf, the names of serial winners Harry Vardon and Tom Watson will forever be associated with The Open. But so too will the names of Doug Sanders and Jean van de Velde.

Another man who has endured more than his fair share of Open anguish is Billy Foster, the star of our latest edition of Caddie Stories.

  1. Didn’t realize hitting the sand in anger was a penalty. I looked it up and it no longer is a penalty as of 2019.

  2. What a legend, if he does get a claret jug, I'll be thrilled because its Fitzpatrick, and cry because its Billy caddying!

  3. Billy, re The Open, over the years you must have asked yourself -'Am I Billy the Jinx?' Only kiddin'.
I, no doubt like at lot of golfing folk was willing Zalatoris to miss that putt on the 18th, even more for your sake than Matt Fitzpatrick's. Good luck at this years Open.

  4. Had the pleasure to meet Billy atone of his Golf Club tour nights. Absolute gent and what you see is what you get. Has had a wonderful career even if he has some near misses in the Open.
