To discuss the modernization of No. 13 at Augusta National Golf Club in advance of the 2023 Masters, it’s important to first note what has never changed with Tournament officials: An unwavering commitment to a vision set forth by Bobby Jones and Dr. Alister MacKenzie some 90 years ago.
“We are intent on making sure that we maintain the design philosophy that Mr. Jones and Alister MacKenzie devised,” Augusta National and Masters Tournament Chairman Fred Ridley said in 2018.
“And with the shot values that they thought were important, we have done what we felt was appropriate through the years to maintain that philosophy and those design parameters.”
Having studied historical documents associated with the par-5 13th, Ridley also emphasized what was paramount.
“There’s a great quote from Bobby Jones dealing specifically with the 13th hole, which has been lengthened over time, and he said that the decision to go for the green in two should be a momentous one,” Ridley said.
“And I would have to say that our observations of these great players hitting middle and even short irons into that hole is not a momentous decision.”To address that concern and “put more club in the hands of the players for their second shots,” the No. 13 updates involved changes to the tee box. While it is the same width and length as before, the tee sits approximately eight feet higher and 35 yards have been added to the hole (545 yards on the scorecard). The potential for a player to take a drive over the left corner of the dogleg has been reduced.
