My Dad purchased my first set of golf clubs for $50 from the local pro shop. They were MacGregor Tommy Armour Tourney, 1, 3, and 5 woods; 3-PW irons; a Bullseye putter; and a canvas bag. Twelve years later, I traded the woods for a set of Wilson Staff 1, 3, and 5 woods; 3-PW Square 2 irons; and 60 degree wedge. The pro shop owner also purchased my irons for $1500 since he was a golf club collector and the MacGregor's were very collectible. I guess that qualifies as my best bargain set of clubs although I sometimes wish I still had the MacGregor's.
Best value I ever got was my friends 2 year old set of Nike Slingshot OSS irons for 150$ Canadian! They were in fantastic condition and really helped me improve my game back in the day!
yeesh – they're massive! probably a little (ok, a lot) easier to hit than the mizuno mp-32s i took delivery of today (fyi, £132 for 3- pw and in amazing condition too!)
I’m still using an old set my dad gave me called PowerBilt. Never seen anyone use them before but they work for me 😅 I only replace drivers and putters
Hmmmmmm…….I have a set of irons much like those only I think mine are a bit older. I have been watching several channels wondering if I should buy a new set with a lot more technology or should I stick with my old Callaways from 3 decades ago. After watching this I ask myself why bother spending a LOT of money on newer clubs based on the limited amount of time I spend playing. The tough thing for an old fart like me is that I cannot compare myself and my swing to you young whippersnappers who hit every club you touch well. James, I believe that par is within your reach regardless of what club is put into your talented hands. If the clubs don’t really matter, why buy new ones?
I took up golf a few years ago and after starting with a box set, I started replacing parts of my bag with new or decent second hand clubs. My mate said he had an old, but never used set of irons I could buy for 80 quid. I agreed. A full set 3-pw of Wilson di7s still in wrappers. I've replaced everything again yet still use these irons. I love them
I'd respect you more if you'd just stop asking, "should I put these in my bag?", for every club you review. We all know you're never going to game anything old. Or clubs for high handicappers. Just say, "if you're a so and so handicap, maybe you should consider this or that club." Good content otherwise.
Love my thrift store find $12 set of Callaway x20s, reshafted them with a set of true temper dynalite steel r flex that i had sitting around, fromthe stock shortened 1.5" senior flex graphite shafts…
Time for James to stop wingieng and carrying on after each shot. Show some enjoyment, at least you are out in the fresh open air on a sunny day playing a nice course.
Im playing a set of Callaway XR irons with stiff steel shafts 5-A that i snagged in phenomenal condition for 200 dollars (American) from a local shop just after Xmas. The clubs are in truly phenomenal condition. They set the stage for the newest in the Callaway line of cup face technology and forgiving irons and I adore them. Slightly less chunky than the Berthas but the history is definitely there.
Where do I start. Ben Hogan apex 2 2 through equalizer 40 dollars. Ping eye 2 coppers 2 thru pw 80 dollars. Maxfli revolution black dots 50 dollars. Cleveland Ta5 gun metals 125 dollars. Those are my best ones.
The best value I ever found for both playing and beauty are my playing irons which were thrifted from Goodwill. Taylor Made RAC TP 2005 4-P($30). They hit like a dream and look amazing!

I've just sold my 2004 Big Bertha Iron set. Been full of regret since. Great irons.
Just need to get used to the B21s that have replaced them
My biggest bargain is my Nike VR1 pro blade irons, mint condition for £350
For a long time… I wanted the 2002 BB’s!!!
Bought a set of RIFE irons . Got me from 23.6 to 12 in 7 rounds. Without any fitting at age of 63 .
I bought some brand new cobra f8 irons…. Auction ended early one Xmas morning, paid £312…. Sold them 3 years later for £320
these big bertha's and king cobra oversized were both the most forgiving to me

Had them. Hated them.
They are a good option for someone who doesn’t have an option of buying newer clubs.

To be fair got a set of the 2018 rogues for £210 off eBay 4 to PW…. I’d say that was more of a bargain… they were pretty much mint.
Hey James great clubs ive been looking for a set of those for ages. Would you sell them??
I’m still using an old set my dad gave me called PowerBilt. Never seen anyone use them before but they work for me 😅 I only replace drivers and putters
Well done James 👏
You ask “why make it harder” but your a Mizuno fanboy? Ya can’t have it both ways James
Try and find some of the last of the Nike SQ irons. Jst when they were getting things right they quit. Too bad

You can literally get them off eBay for £100, that pro has laughed all the way to the bank 😂

Got 4 to pw Mizuno MP54s from American Golf about 5 years ago £180 immaculate condition, still use them and live them
My Dad bought those Big Bertha irons with steel shafts when new, he still uses them to this day.
What model are they?
Nothing is more forgiving or more ugly then the Cleveland turbo launchers….and yet I love them and have them in the bag

Callaway made some of the ugliest but forgiving clubs ever. Can't argue with results but they were tough to look at…

They have barley been used. Love them
