Patrick Cantlay & Xander Schauffele were asked about the buzz over pace of play issues at the 2023 Masters, and they defend their own speed before they team up at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
You are playing a game. If a surgeon takes a few extra minutes who cares. They are dealing with real life issues. Bring the idea of the pitch clock to golf and enforce it.
I play a mini we have a player assistant that keeps things moving along maybe he can show the tour how that works.I am also disappointed in Zander's comment since we buy the clothes, balls and clubs they endorse that gives them the contracts to afford their lifestyle.
Gee, sorry I'm just an average joe who plays muni's who doesn't play for Millions of dollars. I really don't give a crap how slow you play I find myself watching more LIVGolf lately anyway. LIVGolf has that average joe that plays muni's feeling that I like. Elitist PGATour.
So the old saying applies here: Anything that can happen will happen.
I agree with these two awesome guys that slow play is not on them.
And to be fair most pga tour coverage is even slower than the players. But that’s not here nor there.
They both clearly benefit from taking their time, so they will take all the time they can.
The only way to change pace of play is rules and rules that are actually enforced.
There is a certain beauty to a seemingly untimed game, sometimes more time can be a players worst enemy, there’s a lot of wrinkles with no time. But there are also a lot of problems at all levels.
This is why courses and tours go outside the usga rules to keep the pace moving in a way that is fair for everyone.
At the recreational level pace is taken seriously because paying customers wanna finish. So courses make their own rules to make that happen.
At the junior level organizations make up rules to get everyone in.
And by the way for those of us who sometimes can get a bit too thoughtful for our own good (we aren’t all Pat cantlays beautiful mind) The Usga and rna would do is all a huge favor if they didn’t give us so much time.
Start penalizing and you stop the nonsense slow play. It is ridiculous. For Xander to say they’re playing some amount of money is BS. These guys make more money outside the game in endorsements than they do playing.
He says it takes them longer but they’re not playing under different rules to others. Also he’s in position but is he ready to play? We all have a certain time to hit a shot and it’s not long

Leave them alone people they can play as slow as they like, people need to be more patient and let people take as long as they need.

Slow play kills golf…muni, country club, and viewing. Who can watch a 5 or 6 hour tournament?
