My annual rant seems to happen around this time of year. Just a few things to consider as we are in some turbulent times…

  1. John, as you have pointed out before, the ball spins less, has no seam that goes around its equator and thus flies straighter. (Is the modern ball different fro the old Polara?) This allows the player to really take rips at the ball without worrying that it will end up two fairways over. Maybe it is because I am old and can only generate about 100mph club head speed, but I miss being able to make the ball fade and draw with just a little path adjustments. Today, it feels like I have to use a slice path to get just a baby fade. Again, this could be just due to age.

Game is different. Motivation seems to have been to speed up pace of play and for viewers to see more birdies on Sunday. I agree that both have sort of neutered the game for people that played in the 50s thru 90s.

Oh, my point? Good April rant. Spot on.

  2. Bobby Jones desire for the par 5's was to have them reachable in 2 by the better players. That's right from Augusta Nationals website. I grew up playing persimmon but I don't understand your disgust with modern equipment. Persimmon is fun to hit, yes, but times change technologic advances happen. If not we would still be driving Model A's and listening to the radio instead of modern transportation and digital television. You mention the course was unchanged. Not true. On the official Augusta app they describe many changes that occurred from the 30's up through the 90's. Bunkers moved or eliminated, greens moved or recontoured, water hazards eliminated or moved. The course is ever evolving to match the current game. Well done Augusta National

  3. the courses are all still perfect and the same for 99 percent of golfers. Let the pros do what they do.
