There was a noticeable slowdown in the pace of play at the Masters in 2023. Brooks Koepka called it “brutally slow”, saying the group in front of them with Patrick Cantlay and Viktor Hovland may have been responsible.

  1. They said it took Rahm and Koepka 40 minutes to play the first 2 holes. Cantlay is slow, but I never seen a slower player than the am. Bennett, this kid took several practice shots and finally struck the ball, on every single shot, never seen pro players waiting to hit, literally sitting on a bench at one point, I can understand in the pouring rain, but Sunday was darn near perfect, I never seen professionals waiting, I could not wait for Bennett to be out of the final group, because I was sick of waiting for him to hit the damn ball.

  2. I guess the master need to start clocking just like the pga tour. I play with slow play and feels like they intentionally slow play which they are not but just slow and they don't realize that or they just play dumb because there isn't rule that enforce it. But they don't realize they are extremely slow everyone behind them. I don't blame Koepka pointing out. don't like slow player neither. it feels like they own all the time on their own and ignore everyone else.

  3. Yes Pro Golf needs to penalize slow play. Also they cannot penalize whole groups because of one slow player. Penalize just the slow player. One warning then if the slow player repeats one or two strokes.

  4. Cantlay was definitely the brutally slow guy yesterday. I was screaming at the TV for him to hurry up. Felt bad for Koepka especially. Thought it threw off rhythm for final twosome.

  5. I’ve said it before the PGA tour has a slow play problem. The amateur, Bennett, who played with Rahm and Koepka was really slow. Cantlay is not only the most boring person on the tour he is sloooowwww. Scottie Sheffler is painfully slow.

    There are countless others.

Everytime I post something about slow play I get all the snobs defending it. Look….. it’s a rule’s violation….. period. You get warned that your out of position. You get put on the clock if you don’t pick it up. 3rd time everyone in the group is penalized.

The players should be policing it but that’s not realistic. A guy maybe slow playing to get in another guys head. The tournament has to get involved and get involved early. Don’t let it get out of control.

  6. Koepa had no problem with the pace of play for the first 3 days when he was leading….I knew he would,as usual, find something or someone to blame because he did not win. John Rahm is a fast player but he didnt have a problem with pace of play, he just got on with the job in hand.

  7. Sky News live in the UK hardly mentioned the pace of play but it was obvious the final group were waiting

  8. Seems like the Masters went easy on the players after all the horrible weather they had to deal with. These guys had to deal with crazy wind, rain and 2 play stoppages… then you wanna attack guys for slow play? I hate slow play but it's the Masters and guys are really trying.

  9. i remember back in the 70's Lee Trevino was livid with how slow play was back then, and 50 years later nothing has changed?⏱

  10. You can tell both Hovland and Koepka's play was affected by it and even Rahm seemed to find it way too slow, despite him playing very good and winning.

  11. I live outside the USA, I live in Dominican Republic. I watched the masters on espn Deportes…. As I do events such as MNF. Video coverage is identical, only commentary is different. In the case of the masters there are extra commercial breaks as it is only limited commercials on US feeds. Internationally the networks advertise as normal. Pace of play was mentioned when the second to last group was on the 13th green and the fact that entire 14th hole was open.

  12. Cantlay is the modern day Ben Crane Can't watch him that's why I got a FF button so when they show the POS I go ahead

  13. Well it helped Ram win I'm happy that it was slow play just so a liv player did not win.

  14. As much as I loved the amateur Bennett,,,, that kid gripped, regripped, etc etc etc. Reminded me of the young Sergio Garcia.

  15. Slow pace is a rhythm killer and sucks the fun out the game. Makes me leave the course. So I’m with brooks

  16. Cantlay has ZERO personality. He’s a detriment to the tour because he looks like he’s getting a rectal exam every tournament instead of earning millions playing a game. I can’t stand him.

  17. keggan bradley used to kill me, with over the ball, than gets behind it and looks like he stuck in place rocking forward…. last time I saw him play he was ok, no rocking…

  18. Someone told Cantlay he's King of the jungle, the rest of ya'll are squirrels trying to get a nut. What a flakin entitled dope!

  19. Like DJ once said, “Only two things can happen, you either hit a good shot or a bad shot so why waste time doing it?”

  20. Slow play is the scourge of golf. Its selfishness period. If I know that my group is holding up players behind us, I cannot continue to have fun. And fun is the point isn’t it ? In my experience, notorious slow players for the most part, will refuse to even acknowledge that they are slow and get offended when they are told about it. Pace of play must be enforced at all levels of the game.

  21. Although I certainly empathize with Brooks, and do agree, Brooks should take ownership of the fact that he played bad on the weekend and got beat. Not excusing Cantlay ‘s selfish slow play however. But Brooks needed to find a way to deal with it and not let it bother him. No excuses. For as great as he played the first 36 holes, he played conversely just as bad the last 36. It’s a 72 hole tournament. He got beat plain and simple. In general, Brooks comes across as arrogant versus confident. It’s a very fine line between the two and a world of difference. And that is compensation for some kind of emotional insecurity. Brooks needs to honestly assess to himself where and how he got off track and not blame someone else for his own shortcomings. No way am I condoning Cantlay either. He seems a little too cocky for his own good as well. And take note if you are reading this – if you are a slow player you are wrong and you are the problem. Slow play is selfish and inexcusable. And finally, congratulations to John Rahm on his well deserved victory. And thank you Jesus.

  22. Maybe Cantlay figured he’d end up higher on the PiP chart instead of being alongside Rick Fowler last year even though his record was one of the best last season, if he slowed up Koepka.

  23. If you have a hole open IN front of you , the group behind you is waiting, that's the definition of slow play. Cantlay should of been told to pick up the pace or assessed a 2 stroke penalty. Shame on the PGA for not stepping up and following the rule's. Or was it that the PGA didn't want Koepka to win the masters?

  24. It’s frustrating that rules are in place but never enforced. It seems that lately, the officials, NFL,NBA,MLB and now PGA have become the news as much as the event itself.

  25. Cantlay had to wait on 16 tee for green to clear. Henley was still on green when Koepka was on 15 green. Cantlay was in position. Watch the broadcast.

  26. Don't blame Koepka's collapse on slow play. It didn't seem to bother Rahm much. He was able to maintain his focus. The world doesn't revolve around Brooksy's pace. He was so confident about being healthy and being in the lead. He got outplayed when it really mattered.
