  1. Yeah Romans were anti Christian initially. The part of the vid where it said that a preacher was crucified they were talking about Jesus. Romans for most of their history were anti Christian and that includes Catholics. Catholicism is one of the earliest forms of Christianity. Christians only stoped being persecuted for the most part when Constantine became Christian.

  2. The video lirerally just said Nero started persecuting christians, and the guy asked if the roman religion was christianity…
At that point Rome had been tolerant of most religions, some even described the romans as seculars…

  3. How can you teach the history of ancient Rome in 20 minutes? It's surely full of mistakes disinformation and it's useless. Anyway since I watched videos of black people who knew nothing about the real origin and history of slavery and they mentioned gladiators well gladiators were slaves enemy soldiers captured and sold as slaves and forced to fight in the arena. some of them could become very famous and could be freed and freed slaves were called liberti in latin.

  4. The main religion of Imperial Rome was to their Gods, Jupiter, Minerva, Mars, etc. They also had the cult of the Emperor, the Emperor as a God, hence, as the top, the Emperors were given the Title of Pontifex Maximus, or Great Bridge. But they were very open to other religions. Egyptian religion was big. Jew had Temples in Rome and, though viewed with suspicion, as they believed in only one God. Two religions that Rome did not allow was Druidism, mainly because they had human sacrifices and only the State (Rome) could execute someone, and Christianity, as they, like the Jews believed in only one God AND, they ate and drank the flesh and blood of their God. Again, only the State can execute someone. They didn't understand the Christian notion of Communion/Eucharist.
As for Roman conquests, it has to be understood that if they had lost the battles, their opponents would have done the same thing to the Romans. So looking back from today, we can say how brutal they were. But the Celts, Carthaginians, Greeks, Germans, etc, would have done the same to them if they lost. But the Roman Legions had better equipment and tactics. The battle of Alesia where Julius Caesar defeated two Celtic Armies is fascinating.

  5. Mel Gibson's movie was "The Passion of the Christ" and it was set in Roman occupied Jerusalem.

  6. Nero burning Rome is nowdays considered a myth, since it's the first christians who would later accuse him of that, just like he accused them.
Truth is that Rome was a highly densely populated metropoly, in an age buildings would mostly be built of woods, especially in poorer districts of the city.
Now, add to that the fact that the only way to light and warm up the houses during the night would be candles and fire in general…

Rome actually did have periodic fires, in fact, the first "firefighters" were born in Rome.

  7. If you think they last long, just look at ancient Egypt. Cleopatra is closer to the Iphon than she was to the Pyramids when she was born. They went on for 4 thousand plus years and created a lot of stuff we use like the 365 day calendar, the 24 hours system, they even had advanced surgiries. Also Cleopatra, a woman who spoke 10 languages, she was a master strategist and she would deal with men on their level. She is often reduced as a sexy mistress, this is Rome anti-Cleopatra propaganda. U should react to sonething on ancient Egypt and Cleopatra. Also something on Alexander the great. The stuff they did back then, we often think of the ancient world like they were dumb and naive, they got dumb and naive after the fall of Rome, the standart of life went down.

  8. Remember that the Roman Empire in the East would last until the year 1453 AD. A mere 40 years before Columbus discovered America.

  9. i have just returned from a week in rome and it truly is magical and wonderful but u have to you have to be careful about pickpockets, it happens so much. my mom got her wallet stolen literally on the last trip to the station to leave rome hahahah, so unlucky.
and also romans will always try to scam u if you’re a tourist, we were pretty safe about that cuz we’re italians but i saw a lot of non italian tourist get scammed in every way. so just be careful

  10. The destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem by Titus was an act of war against the Jewish resistance, during the bloody Jewish-Roman wars of the first century CE. "Christian religion" was semi-obscure and considered a sect of Judaism.

Provinces of Syria and Iudea (modern Siria, Lebanon, Palestina and Israel) were famous for being rebellious and seditious since the first roman invasion (under Pompey). As a matter of fact, Jesus was accused of sedition and crucified.

  11. Paradoxically, you are at that same point now, but since everything is faster these days, you will also recognize the signs of the fall of our civilization.

  12. I think watching a video like What Ancient Rome Looked Like would be much more interesting than this. 20 minutes just isn't enough time to get the full story, instead of only a synopsis.

  13. This 20min summary can be forgiven for missing so much significant information due to its sheer brevity but thenormous amount of inaccuracies and mistakes genuinely cannot.

  14. For more history content I'd recommend you guys check out "HistoryMarche" and "Kings and Generals", both very good history channels with a lot of great videos.

  15. To be fair, almost every war in antiquity could have been called genocide. As severe as it may seem, Caesar did nothing that the Gauls and Vercingetorix would not have done to the Romans. That is the brutality of war. As good as this video is at explaining the history of Rome, due to lack of time he couldn't explore better the reasons why Caesar did what he did,it seems that he was power hungry and a tyrant, someone he never was

  16. mi piacerebbe sentire un vostro commento su questo video cantante italiano . Vasco Rossi – C'è chi dice no (Live Modena Park

  17. Until the emperor Constantine, Christians were persecuted in Rome. This included throwing them to lions in the Coliseum.

  18. Ancient Romans were Pagan. They believed in the stories of Jupiter Optimus Maximus and his family as being deities.

  19. One other thing about Julius Caesar, He did a lot of good for Rome. He had waterways diverted to stop localized flooding. Did public works to build temples, more bathhouses, better sanitation. He cracked down on lawlessness inside the city. He allowed non Roman chieftains from conquered lands to to have a say in the Roman Senate with representation. You have to understand,. All empires expanded. You cant use 21st century sensibilities in a 1st century world. People were not distracted then like they are now. There was no TV, radio, phone, or computer to burn hours of your life in. Its one of the reasons the Coliseum became so popular. It was the first mass public distraction, as was the Circus Maximus, and amphitheaters. Roman life could be very difficult to the poor. It was very common for a person to see two waves of plague in their lifetime. The Roman Army would order all of the cities shutdown. You could do commerce inside the city. You could leave the city. But you couldnt return until the army deemed it safe. If you were caught trying to enter the city you were killed. Caesar did a lot of good returning from Gaul and the other Senators grew very jealous. If you like this kind of stuff you need to react to HBO's Rome. Its only 26 1 hr episodes. It is exceptional and you are literally put into a time machine. The creators were Roman historians.

  20. you guys should totally visit Roma, i'm from Roma and i can tell you that there is a reason why this city is also called "Roma aeterna"

  21. Ancient Romes religion was copied for the most part from ancient Greek religion. A pagan religion they believed like Greece in Zeus, Aphrodite, Apollo etc etc etc with most of the God's names and stations changed. It wasn't until Eperor Constantines death that Christianity became the state religion and the foundation of the Roman Catholic church.
