Starting the downswing is fundamental to producing a good swing. In this lesson, I demonstrate the correct movement with the use of a prop to help players experience the required feeling of the stretch in the left shoulder, arm and wrist.

  1. Hey Padraig, great content as always. Would love to see a tip on being able to compress the irons and make sure hitting the ball then turf 🏌️‍♂️Thanks

  2. The thing I struggle with the most is a cupped wrist in the second half of the backswing. Would love a tip on that subject.

  3. We are beyond lucky to have such a wonderful and talented guy like Paddy that takes his time help us Amatures! Thank you and congrats for your entry to World Golf Hall of Fame!!!

  4. Thank you, Padraig. Would like to see a video on how to avoid fat shots/ control low point.

  5. This lesson has shown me 2 thing’s wrong with my downswing, 1 is spinning out and the other is timing, I.e. loading into lead side just before I reach the end of my backswing. Thanks Padraig, I would love to see a lesson on maintaining balance through to the finish.

  6. Thanks Paddy, things are tough over there, you still have the same clothes on from the last few videos, hope you win, to improve your wardrobe. (magadh)

  7. Good luck this week Paddy and next! Great tips always if you struggle after playing then coaching should help you pay the bills 👍🏼

  10. I don't want to speak for everyone but I think we are all interested in how you're bombing it so far on senior tour. Can you do more speed vids?! Love the channel

  11. The difference between a pro and recreational golfer’s swing is how much acceleration they get in the club head via freely cocking (waggling) of the wrists (ulnar to radial deviation on the way up.

That acceleration of the club head up around the hands is what creates the inertia resistance at the top when the hand try to reverse the direction of the moving mass as illustrated in this drill with the golf cart and towel. Force increases with the square of the velocity and using the momentum of the takeaway extension to snap the club up around the hands generates that force effortlessly IF the wrists aren’t inhibited by too much grip tension.

A huge difference in the swings of pros vs the average weekend golfer starts with how they grip the club. Try holding it up in the air with shaft vertical with elbows bent when placing hands on the grip then letting the weight of the club pull the arms straight as they are lowered. What starting in the air with arms bent does is cause the forearms to counter rotate against each other. The rotation stretches the muscles and connecting tissues in the forearms which control the curling of the finger and without and muscular contraction you will find your fingers gripping the club ideally without losing the ability to waggle it up and down with radial/unlar deviation the action needed in the backswing to allow momentum to freely swing it up around the hands, accelerating the club head mass and exponentially increasing its kinetic energy—the force you then pull down against in the downswing as with the action and feeling illustrated in this drill.

I’ve used a rope through a old shaft tied overhead to a post to illustrate the same feeling of pulling down against the inertial resistance of the club head mass at the start of the downswing. If you don’t feel that same sensation of pulling down against resistance at the start of the downswing it will be because you didn’t generate enough acceleration and increase in club head kinetic energy on the way up by letting if freely snap up around the hands like the pros do.

  12. love the way you do this, and that flop shot in valero..BRAVO, took me by surprise, loved it

  13. Your amazing Padraig watching you in Texas -5 at moment in your second round keep it up lets win this and take on Augusta for the 18th time. Go Padraig

  14. I like the way you break things down padraig it always improves my game when I watch your tutorials, thanks for being a true legend of golf ⛳️

  15. Exactly what I've been working on with my coach. I feel like hands have to go first to waist height then turn…
    GL in tournament!

  16. This is a great explanation of downswing and shallowing the club. Actually, how to shallow the club, not shallowing the club itself, it comes the weight shift and body movement, stretching as Mr Harrington says.

  17. Another brilliant tutorial mate. Wish I had ur vids to learn from when I started playing. Thanks 👍👍👍

  18. Paddy has saved my golf game.
Thank you and your team for giving back to the golfing world.
    Cheers from Australia👍🏌‍♀
