A shot-by-shot hickory golf course vlog featuring Long Island, NY-based hickory golfer Christian Williams playing pre-1935 hickory golf at Normandie Golf Club in Bel-Nor, MO. Williams is a golf historian with a high handicap, sharing his passion for the game through this channel where he shows how to collect, repair, and play with antique, wood-shafted golf clubs. In this round, Williams, is using his pre-1935 “modern” hickory golf set featuring authentic 1920s and early 1930s golf clubs (details below). Welcome to the channel!
Joining Williams in this round is amateur golfer and golf architecture aficionado Jeff Kissel. Jeff shares his love for golf architecture through Instagram as @munis_and_monsters
Normandie Golf Club dates to 1901, which makes it the oldest public 18-hole golf course west of the Mississippi River still in its original location. Newspaper accounts cite regular play on the course began in 1902 over a layout designed by Robert Foulis. One of the three Foulis Brothers of St. Andrews that each made a considerable impact on American golf at the turn of the century, Robert is considered the father of American golf in the St. Louis, MO, area because of all of the courses he designed there in the first two decades of the 20th century.
Foulis’ original design has been modified considerably over the years, but the course that area golfers have enjoyed over the last several decades will be changed even more starting in August 2023 when the course will undergo an extensive renovation by Nicklaus Design Group. In fact, tree removal had already begun by the time this video was posted (March 2023), opening up vistas that haven’t been seen on the course in many years.
