Yip, lots of crazy comments. People seem to think that a ball that is rolled back would 'help' amateurs golfers and 'reduce spin' on wayward shots. People also seem to think that rolling back the ball will 'level the playing field'. Also heard folk saying that minimising the distance the ball goes will 'protect historic courses'. All sorts of nonsense being spouted.
I mean if anything you’d see people trying to hit it harder, right? I could see average club head speed going up if this happens. Still think it’s a stupid idea though
Same old story with golf. Old men in suits making decisions that don't make any sense. Roll it back for what reason, they have launch monitors now. They'll have the new ball maxed out before lunchtime.
Not sure I’ve heard people saying that particular argument ?
IF we want to protect the integrity of historic major hosting venues and preserve how the course was intended to play, how do you go about that ? I’m not talking higher rough although it would work to a degree but that also hits amateurs harder and in their pocket through lost balls. Bunkers possibly ? Most are now driven over it seems or the ability to hit 3wood is so much longer that a layup isn’t the worst option.
If we don’t want to protect the courses then things can just carry on as they are and if that’s how it pans out so be it. My “counts for nothing” opinion is the game is far removed from how it was 30-40yrs ago and something should be done, whether the ball rollback is the way I have no idea, it’s seems a logical place to start, along with driver spec, I know it’s said we already have plateaued due to advances being smaller but were those regs too forgiving ? & tech has found ways to find other gains, forgiveness, launch knowledge, spin control for example ?
But if the consensus is just let it go I think we have to accept that in 30-40-50yrs or maybe even more the majors as we know them now may well be replaced by something more meaningful to todays golfers ?
I have no skin in the game, but I have played, 1.62 into 1.68, blades (proper blades) into GI persimmon into metal, into titanium into graphite shafts, into urethane covered 3piece balls etc all welcome assistance for the amateur chopper but unnecessary for an elite tour level pro who would still play entertaining astonishing array of golf shots with any club/ball they had in their hands.
One final point, it’s a debate that is worthy of real consideration and not simply dismissed and shutdown. It’s not going to effect me (unless waist high rough becomes the norm) so Hopefully whatever decision is made is the right one for golf whichever way it falls 👍
They really need to consider course set up rather than this nonsense. Narrow the fairways, grow the rough and make bunkers proper penalty areas instead of being able to hit 3 wood out of them. There you go, I’ve solved the issue. 🏅
Reduce the driver cc And thus reduce the size of the sweet spot. Simples
Me hahaha 🤣
Have you been watching me nothing wrong with those techniques 😂
I hate the idea. A lot of fans want to see the long drives, it will hurt viewership/ attendance. The past two weeks have been great examples of not overly long courses that were absolute beasts.
If they want to change the ball just leave the weight the same and make it bigger- it will fly shorter, be harder to putt with the same size hole and easy to differentiate from current balls.
You’re not welcome🤣🤣
The new rule makes me worried for Lou's mental health 😂
I think rolling back the ball will back fire and piss off us amateur players more than the Pros! It will hurt the already struggling golf industry from top to bottom! Big mistake and a huge risk with no reward if they do it.
Is the LPGA gonna adopt the new ball?
I don't think anyones saying that.
The more I consider this proposal, the more I agree with this being the simplest way to solve the issue of courses getting effectively shorter in the professional game.
It's not the ball, it's course set up. Grow the rough and watch them struggle.
grow the fairway grass a tiny bit longer, soften them up so a drive doesn't look like a super ball bouncing and rolling 40 yards, grow the rough so if you miss the fairway, you get penalized…
