Ben Crenshaw: Distance has rendered classic courses ‘obsolete’ | Golf Central | Golf Channel

  1. I still believe the USGA and PGA Tour should establish one and only one ball to play in a competition. There are too many gimmicks in golf equipment right now and it is unfair for everyone to have a special souped-up ball. There needs to be a standard.

  2. No course TODAY is as it is when they all designed. The modern professional athlete in ANY sport is not the same as it was..car racing. biking, football, tennis, baseball, basketball, GOLF….etc…be it the sports equipment or the athlete him or herself. It is called: evolution of the sport and the humans that play it. I enjoy seeing a professional golfer hit the ball far..I love it when I hit it far. So let it be. You want to make the game golf more rewarding…allow me to get free relief from my ball in a divot; to get punished for something I have no control over is wrong. The USGA and R&A should fix that!

  3. The courses are not obsolete. Rather, golfers who have nurtured their talent to be among the top 1% of the top 1% play those courses in such a way that we mere mortals cannot do ourselves. And for that reason, we should continue to have the pros play there with the same equipment anyone else can play so we can appreciate just how good they are.

Edit: Plus, the risk of all their added distance is so too frequently under appreciated. Do you know just how much better these longer pros have to be to keep their balls on the map compared to their shorter-hitting counterparts? It’s not just distance that gives them the advantage—it’s the added skill to harness their length and not get brutally punished by it. It’s so much harder to play great golf with some of these guys’ length and speed.

  4. Here’s an idea. Have tournaments where the yardage is 8k yards and have regular balls. Have tournaments where the ball is limited flight and can be played on short courses. This type of ball is spinnny and allows players to carve the ball left and right

  5. Pro should be playing mb blades period. It’s a joke there playing forgiving clubs. Not true talent. Make them earn it, don’t help them earn it.
