  1. Just let the rough areas to grow 2 ft tall, that would solve all problems. In the old Melhorn days , if you went into the rough it took 2 or 3 swipes just to get it out onto the fairway.

  2. Golf was such a better game when I could use every club during a round. Now its just drivers and wedges.

  3. The Driver is too forgiving today, I have a couple of drivers from the sub-300cc era and its crazy how much more forgiving today's driver heads are. You can hit it pretty much anywhere on the head and keep it in play due to the fact that the MOI is so high. That coupled with the fact that the drivers have such optimized centers of gravity allowing high launch and low spin enables a very hot, low spin ball with incredible aerodynamics to fly well over 300 yards. Some people say if you simply banned the tee, you would de-facto ban the driver so players would have to hit 3 woods off the deck on the tee box.

  4. As soon as we get to an age where we're starting to noticably lose distance, our first response is "today's players are getting too much help from the equipment", instead of admitting that we've lost a few miles off of our fastball. The USGA/R&A already have limits on the flight characteristics of golfballs. Leave things as they are, or at least make it a phased in rollback over a decade or more.

  5. I think it's time for 1250 yard par 6's. (and the NBA needs 12 foot hoops now)

  6. Narrow the fairways past 300 yards, or graduate the rough 2 inches deeper past 300. No need to change anything. I do like the idea of a persimmon and blade only event though

  7. How about not allowing the use of tees so balls have to be played off the deck.

  8. Just change the ball size to the larger Magna size.

Magna balls are 3% increased diameter, but that creates a 10% larger surface area.

Which creates a 10% reduction in distance, regardless of swing speed. (Try it, you'll see)

All professionals (and amateurs) would lose 10% distance.

However, the benefits would be tremendous, because a Magna ball is much, much easier for an amateur to play vs the current sized ball.

A Magna ball sits up more in the rough and fringe, making for much easier contact. (And easier to find in the rough)

A Magna ball has a higher center of gravity, making it easier for the amateur to get it up in the air.

A Magna ball actually takes on less break on the putting green, making it easier to putt.

And there is historical precedent because the R&A switched from the smaller British ball to the larger American ball in 1990 (1974 for the Open Championship).

So you have a simple solution that will immediately reduce distance by 10%, and make the game easier for kids and amateurs, which will greatly help grow the game.

  9. Agree with so much of what John says here, however, I think the ball speed should be reduced, it should never have been allowed to go so far. So many great courses are obsolete and it takes so long to get round. A round of golf used to be 3 hours max.
Difficult to change the driver, it is so easy to hit and players are injuring themselves by hitting so hard (Zalatoris). But the ball speed could be reduced slowly, over many years and no-one would notice.
Golf has become a fitness sport like tennis where you have to be 6ft 3in at least. Gary Player won so much as did Pavin. Not many little guys have a chance now, however skilful.

  10. This 💯. I have been saying this for years. Don't worry about the ball. It's the driver! I have a modern Nicklaus 460 driver from 2010 & Ping G driver from 2016. They are night and day and the Nicklaus driver was a great driver, actually. I think shape does play a factor as well as weight distribution. Nicklaus driver was more pear shaped. Ping is more wedge shaped with more horizontal depth. So, imagine the difference between 1992 and now. I know. I've played thru both eras like John. Need to limit face size and volume. But he's right. The cat has been out of the bag for way too long.

  11. Interesting thoughts on rolling the game back. My current 460cc driver face is just 4" x 2". I"m not sure about 3.5" x 2" isn't going to make that much difference. I also think that the Pro's are playing a course setup that is pristine with perfect fairways, bunkers and greens that roll incredible. How about the Pro play, pull his clubs, read his own putts, figure out his yardage and get away from this two man team effort. I know it's important for television that Pro's make birdies and eagles, but it's really a draw when the Pro's are bombing drives. If they roll back the ball the long hitters will still be long and short hitters will still be short. Honestly I don't think there's a good resolution.

  12. If there is going to be an equipment cap it should be capped as it stands TODAY then nothing is being taken from anybody.
The only problem is that equipment improvement by manufacturers funds the sport and creates a buzz, imagine just buying clubs because yours are worn out 😕 sounds very boring to me.
