A single decision involving an NFL quarterback can make or break an NFL franchise. Just look at how Joe Montana changed the San Francisco 49ers, or how Tom Brady changed the New England Patriots.

Here are five such instances where an NFL team held onto a quarterback for way too long, and 5 times a team gave up on their signal-caller way too early.

  1. No, the Jets didn't give up on Geno too soon. After getting his jaw broken by a backup safety, he had to go. Unless you seriously think you can keep a QB on your bench for a decade in the hopes he might someday grow up. This one is just ridiculous.

  2. 5 Times A Team Gave Up On A RB Too Early…And 5 Times They Gave Up Too Late

  3. Carr is better than Jimmy. The Raiders are going to really suck. Mark Davis is an idiot and should take his $5b and go away. I'm not even a Raiders fan.

  4. Geno Smith had a good season this year but it's a bit of a stretch to say the Jets let him go too early. He was there for 4 years and it took until his 9th season to have a good season. That's 5 years after the Jets released him.

  5. Dummy-troff did a lot of dumb moves here. Got Mike Smith fired bc of his garbage picks Smith didn't want. I'm so glad we have Fontenot now

  6. Be careful, whenever you talk about Brett Favre, you need to preface everything with "Allegedly" otherwise his lawyers might get to you. Here's an example:

    – Brett Favre was ALLEGEDLY selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2nd round in 1991
    – Brett Favre ALLEGEDLY went on to revive a Packers franchise mired in over a decade of irrelevance
    – Brett Favre ALLEGEDLY led them to 11 playoff appearances, 2 NCF Championship wins, and a Super Bowl Victory
    – Brett Favre ALLEGEDLY won 3 MVP awards and ALLGEDLY retired as the all time leader in Passing Yards, Passing Touchdowns, and Quarterback wins

That should make sure this video doesn't get you taken to court 😇😇

  7. Geno Smith is a product of the Seahawks system. NYJ didn't do anything wrong to dump him

  8. Geno Smith career before last season was 34-37 TD Int no team is hanging onto him after that. And if he regresses next year 2022 will go down as a fluke

  9. Bad Carr take because the Raiders would've just held up or ruined another promising qb had they traded Carr

  10. I'm a Jets fan and they give up on every "franchise" QB to fast!! Every QB they draft is the next "franchise" QB!! Then 2 seasons later they draft another "next franchise QB!! J E T S JETS JETS JETS. We also like Green Bay left overs.

  11. The colts did have unitas successor drafted in Bert jokes who was on a superstore trajectory until injuries hit him get your facts right tps

  12. I disagree on the Matthew Stafford comparison mainly because he won a super bowl as soon as he got out of Detroit. I'd call him a very good, not great, but very good. Quarterback that just wasted away in a bad situation. I'd bet money we are about to see the same situation with DeShaun Watson, he is very talented but there can be no success in a franchise ran that poorly. It was looking like that was going to happen with Trevor Lawrence under urban Meyer as well. Thank goodness people realized that and changes were made.

  13. I will never forgive my Falcons for getting rid of Brett Favor…I mean Favray…I mean Favree…Favreh? Favrie? Favier? Fairve? No no no…Favre. Favre. I meant Favre. Damnit! Why Atlanta?! Just why?!

  14. I stopped after the back to back Derek Carr and Geno Smith. Carr is better than most think and almost everyone thought Geno was washed. He's had 1 good season and I wish him the best but it could be a fluke.

  15. Geno wouldn't be the player he is today without sitting behind Wilson for so long. He benefitted from being coached in an excellent system while having no pressure on him to win for years. This isn't a shot at him though. He never gave in to the idea of being just a backup for the rest of his career and worked towards an opportunity at a starting job he may have never had a chance at had things gone differently. He's truly become a mature and balanced player that gives his absolute all at every opportunity because he knows what a blessing it is to have it. He believed in himself to succeed when just about anyone else would have given up and it shows every time he's on the field. Geno may be one of the greatest comeback stories of our era and he's definitely not done improving. There may not be another QB who knows exactly how special his opportunity is and how quickly it can be taken away. He's a true team player and he's grateful for every second he spends on the field. If this guy can win a championship someone better make a movie because stuff like this doesn't just happen.

  16. Like Romo the Cowboys are going to wait until it's too late to move on from the always inconsistent underachieving, and overrated and overpaid Dak Prescott, who constantly underachieves and holds his team back, even though Dallas has plenty of playmakers in which i'm sure that about at least 70 ÷ of halfway decent or elite qbs could take advantage of. Also an elite offensive line and a defense that is as close to championship caliber as they've had in 3 decades. And you factor in that Romo didn't have close to a team like this for most of his career. Romo was an underachiever but so far 7 years in Dak hasn't been any better.
