The Pac-12’s on-again and off-again negotiations for its next round of media rights take center stage on this week’s podcast, as hosts Andrew Marchand and John Ourand discuss which media companies are interested in doing a deal and which ones aren’t. Marchand reported that Apple has emerged as a potential landing spot for the Pac-12, leading the hosts to dissect Apple’s sports media strategy.
Other topics on this week’s pod include the NBA’s All-Star Game performance, MLB rule changes and the first weekend of the XFL. Marchand and Ourand talk about the TV production innovations they like most from the XFL and the USFL, which starts its second season in April. This episode has a Mailbag segment where the hosts answer questions from email and Twitter. Marchand and Ourand offer a tribute to longtime MLB broadcast Tim McCarver, who died Feb. 16.

PAC12 is dead
PAC12 isn’t worth $20 million
Guys, Apple doesn’t have a broadcasting network. They don’t have sports media infrastructure, journalists, anchors, mobile equipment, etc…
They do a terrible MLB weekly game.
No one watches MLS. America never will. American soccer doesn’t get ratings at all, let alone new subscribers.
Sports Bars will never carry big tech streaming.
People will not switch from cable on a Saturday afternoon to go find a PAC 12 game.
If you’re an administrator of a PAC 12 school, and you’re not doing everything humanly possible to get an invite to the Big 12 or even ACC at this point, then you need to have your head examined.
The PAC 12 Network is linear; but with crummy distribution. Partnering with Apple could change that, couldn't it?
Google/Youtube would be better.
The XFL/USFL should look at changing the size of the field. Widen to bring back the value of running back, have more plays go out of bounds to reduce impacts, increase the chance of a punt or kickoff for a TD. We miss the days of Billy “White Shoes” Johnson or Devin Hester. Extend the end zone to 15 yards to have more passing TDs and reduce field goals. It’s ridiculous that kickers regularly make 55+ field goals. Field goals under 30 yards would count for 2 points; 31-55 counts for 3 and 56+ counts for 4 points.
