A true legend of the game, and never forget that the Open might have been dropped from the major circuit had it not been for Palmer’s decision to come to the centenary championship at St Andrews in 1960, at a time when fewer and fewer Americans were prepared to make the overseas voyage to compete in the Open which often conflicted with the PGA Championship in the US, a more lucrative major which did not entail, as in those days, two weeks of travel for one week of golf and a comparatively small prize fund.
    This just one part of the huge contribution Arnold Palmer made to the game of golf both on and off the course.
