WWF King of the Ring 1998 is one of the most infamous WWF pay per views of all time. Held in Pittsburgh, PA on June 28th, the show featured a Hell in a Cell encounter pitting The Undertaker against Mankind. During the cell match Mick Foley was thrown off the cage and also put through the cell with a chokeslam; moments in WWF / WWE history that are still discussed to this very day.

Not only was The Undertaker vs Mankind Hell in a Cell match good, but the main event also delivered. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Kane for the WWF Championship is the final match on the card, and this main event would introduce WWF fans to the “First Blood” concept, a match where the winner is the man who draws first blood on his opponent. Owen Hart vs X-Pac is an underrated bout that also takes place at King of the Ring 1998, and we also get a new KOTR tournament winner when semi-finalists Dan Severn, The Rock, Ken Shamrock and Jeff Jarrett compete for the crown.

This video is part of the Reliving The War video series.

  1. The last time Mick Foley put himself through this much punishment in one night, he received only a Japanese soda as a bonus.
This HIAC was as close to a death match as any major promotion was ever going to get af the time.

  2. It was Sunday night. We knew what it meant. An event with one of the most noteworthy matches that has ever been.

  3. So what's the big deal about this undertaker and mankind match. I never knew this was a thing now its everywhere.

  4. I didn't know 'Taker injured his ankle in the Paul Bearer segment. Paul the Giant Killer must have made a comeback after the cameras stopped rolling and put Taker in the ankle lock.

  5. Finally got to watch the Taker vs Makind HITC match properly on a KOTR compilation Blu-Ray several years ago. It was an experience like no other.

  6. This is the PPV I’ve been wearing on for 2 years.
I was 17 and even then the head and shoulders spot was hilarious back then.
I’ll never forget foley rolling off the stretcher fighting everyone off with that smile heading back to the ring then both him snd undertaker climbing back up… the pop from that crowd was absolutely insane.

  7. I was a teenager and I remember being mad that it was summertime and I wouldn't be talking to anyone at school about it on Monday. What an amazing night.

  8. Living in Baltimore at the time, I was lucky enough to 1. See Ron Simmons beat Vader for the WCW Title live from the front row and 2. This one right here. Simmons winning and Foley going off the top was 2 of the most unforgettable things I've seen live.

  9. I met Mick Foley some years ago. He could barely handle a few stairs. He destroyed his body to entertain us and give us all memories. Thank that man for being a legend you won't forget.

  10. Waltman and Owen fought at KOTR 94 and that match started with Owen doing a missile drop kick through the ropes.

  11. Foley landed absolutely perfectly thought that table. The second plummet was just sick!!…. game changer for those who kept banging on about it all being fake. Thanks Mick!

  12. Foley's bump threw the mesh was planned I feel. I mean they avoided that mesh panel while they fought and also you can see broken cable ties on the ring floor after Foley goes threw the panel. Cable ties holding one side of the panel up.

  13. This is only the beginning of the attitude era, and this was the match that really got folks paying attention to the wwf, including myself. We finally reached the prime of the attitude era timeline. Thanks man for bringing us the best time to be a fan of wrestling, keep em' coming.

  14. It might be unpopular but that chokeslam was 100% planned. You can clearly see zip ties all around mankind after the fall.
