Matt and Dom discuss the current standing of LIV Golf Players with each of the 4 majors

  1. Without the world ranking points, it will be very had for LIV players to maintain status in the majors, unless the player wins (or has won) a major. All majors currently exempt ,major winners for 5 years + Masters, Open, PGA give lifetime exemptions for winning their tournament.

It will be hard for guys like Na, Kokrak, Varner, and Ancer to keep their status. They would have qualified easily for most majors this year, but now they will have to qualify through open qualifying or do something like finish top-X (depending on the major) to keep their "major card". Koepka will only be qualified for the PGA after 2024, DJ only for that Masters after 2025 unless they win another major or qualify through another route. Several other guys have lifetimes to the Masters or Open.

LIV needs world ranking points to stay relevant….PEROD!

  2. As a comment to start a vigorous discussion. How many LIV golfers outside for Cam Smith are really serious contenders in the majors?

DJ – getting up there in age, but still has a 2-4 year window
Sergio/Swartzel/Casey – Don't appear to have the game any more
Oossthuzen – Has his picture in the dictionary next to "overrated". 1 major win, but no wins in the states. Is also always held back by injury.
    Reed – Yes
Ancer/Neimann/Periera – Definitely, Yes, but need to stay qualified
Koepka/BDC – Yes, but need to prove injuries are in their past.
Varner/Kokrak/Na – Longshots at best. Solid pros, but all have holes in their games.
    Howell/Perez – Nope
Pieters – Long shot. Solid Euro-tour player, but hasn't shown much in majors
Kaewkanjana – Unknown to most, but could contend in a few years.
    Gooch/Leishmann/Lahari/McDowell/Mickelson/Munoz/Ortiz – Nope
Wolff – Longshot….seems to be a bit weak between the ears.
Piot – Don;t know. Decorated Amateur, can he elevate his game to major status?
Bubba – Could catch lighting in a bottle at Augusta. No chance in others.
    The Rest – Nope

Have I missed anyone…..was doing the roster by memory.

  3. This was never a doubt . On what grounds were they ever going to ban anyone ? The majors are and probably always will be independent to PGAT and all tours .

  4. Regards OWGR. Its there job to rank players not players roll to meet criteria . Find a way or you are not fit to rank all players .

  5. I agree this has felt obvious since they let players play last year. But no doubt LIv needs its own points or they will fall off majors unfairly.

The owgr should do exactly that. The qualifying criteria neeeds to change Matt. Why does it have to be that way the owgr expects, especially since they seem obsolete by the saunas more and more alternative golf rank measures come out (including SI)? The answer is it doesn’t
    Have to be the owgrs way. The owgr needs to adapt its criteria, not vice versa. Why? Because LIv gives top players 25$ million a week plus signin bonuses;
The owgr gives top players nothing but a ranking; which is something almost literally anyone can do better these days.

  6. LIV players are fine with not playing the US tour any more..but give them OWGR points for their events

  7. The monopoly body on world rankings is abusing its power…time for another body to make a fairer ranking system….

  8. If LIV players are not in attendance, then are they still 'majors'? The PGA Champs as an example fields club pros as a part of it's quota. Do I want to watch that?

  9. Several LIV players entered Asian Tour events recently in search of OWGR points. The events had very weak fields. With the exception of Ancer most of them finished down the leaderboard or missed the cut.

  10. Long live The LIV Golf League! True fans aren't stupid sheep like Jay Monahan wants many to be. Jay and his lawyers are the 'bugs and insects.'
