Russell, Jack Nicklaus liked to hit the ball high, Rory hits it high, most poor players struggle to get the ball airborne, why this modern obsession with shaft lean to hit the ball lower and further? If you want to hit your 8 iron like a 6 iron, just hit a 6 iron as we used to.
Plenty of good golfers manage without much or any fsl. Nicklaus, Watson, McIlroy, Oosthuizen, Tom Kim just to name a few.
In any case, try to get fsl on a short shot and the club face can be way open as you demonstrate at 0.53, on a full swing you have to spin the shoulders very hard to get more than a little fsl in which case you end up like Will Zalatoris.

Brilliant expose on what goes into compression -namely shaft lean (accomplished by hands leading club head into impact) and a shallow angle of attack (accomplished by extending chest upward through impact).
Love it!
When looking at numbers on a sim, would low point rather than attack angle be better for gauging compression? I like numbers, but i turn to the video evidence more than anything, no matter what i do i cannot stop from my lead arm bending and starting to flip at impact.
This is actually something I learned this weekend and I thought I finally figured out how to hit an iron. I saw a bit that said get my toe up on set up. Well that put my hands down near my knees and in order to get the face on the ball I had to drag my hands past the ball visually. Everything else just happened but I saw distances I am not used to with my irons. Great lesson. Hit me at the same time as my eureka moment:)
This will actually create another problem, one where the player will come too far from the inside and lose a lot of power.
The club (grip end) has to go up as you say, but exit left around the body for maximum compression, power, and control. Even if a player hasn’t experienced a lot of compression, extending straight through with their arms is a bad idea. It is what it is. Sorry.
Your exceptional when it comes to getting the point across with basic but great knowledge of skills. Thanks 👏
Great video Russel. I need to work on compressing the ball better. Currently I hit it pretty shallow but don’t compress it much
Danke!
How are you closing the face? supinating the left wrist?
does it help if you shallow your path using your right elbow?
I discovered compression when comparing the sound of Nick Price hitting a ball compared to the sound Seve Ballesteros made🤣
