Did you know that this can really cause some big problems in your golf swing? This golf tip will make the golf swing much easier and more consistent for you. It’s surprising to hear this, I know, because I used to think the same thing, “I’ve got to swing the club straight back to hit it solid”.
But, when I learned this crazy-sounding idea of swinging the club “inside”, I was very skeptical but gave it a try…then amazing things happened in my golf game. After being a habitual fader and slicer of the ball, I started drawing the ball and hitting it consistent…I picked up 20 yards while swinging easier…and my swing felt easy on the body. It was like air!
Swinging “straight back” is a problem because it works against the golf swing, not with it. When you swing straight back you end up forcing the golf swing off the correct path it should be on. Then your swing looks robotic, forced, and worst of all, it gets into positions that cause slices, fat shots, hooks, and tons of other problems. The golf swing isn’t meant to be forced…when you work with the natural geometry of the swing, you’ll find that you should really be swinging the club “inside” or “in” as opposed to “straight back”. In this video, you’ll learn why it’s so important to get your club swinging “inside” on an arc as opposed to forcing the club “straight back”.

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

How about you tell the crowd what this „swinging it straight back“ is supposed to fix. Like one peace take away, like not getting the club behind you at shaft parallel. I agree it can be misleading but so can your tips, depending on the error of the player.
Coaches around the world are not stupid. Only that every coach claims he know the only truth. That’s the problem with YouTube coaches. How about a very differentiated and true explanation like, „some coaches tell this … what they mean is this, and i don’t mean this“
My favorite Saguto quote: What more do you want with your life? 😂
This is pure gold!!
I am absolutely flushing it, with this drill !!
Now if only I could putt 🤣🤣
Thanks Tom….always helpful. Keep up the grest content 👌 🇮🇹
Brilliant once again Tom 🏌️♂️
This almost felt like an infomercial 🤣😂🤣
Nope, I was wrong, totally felt like an infomercial 😁
Swinging slightly in also gives you a flatter path that puts your hands even with shoulders , maintain spine tilt and it's automatically on plane
Dude…. The hair. Way better bro.
Love the new video style. Hope it works out.
Your online school is full of great videos. You make golf easy.
Great advise…Make it easyier to follow through with that swing…
Tom, I'm going to park outside of your house until you give me a lesson 🤣🤣
yes but also you can swing the club straight back as long in the down swing you shallow it ( steep-shallow). There are many good players that played and play in this way Matthew Wolff, Jim Furyk, Buba Watson, Jack Nicklaus, etc,etc .If I remember well even Leadbetter started to teach this kind of swing
Tom so very true I didn't for way to long. Thanks for saving us. As always another Great video.
Thanks Tom… you’re the best…. What a great instructor..👏👍🏻
Looking fresh my guy! Nice vid too!
4:25–4:30
My happy place.
Your example of swinging the club straight back is dead on in being out of whack. The teaching of swinging straight back is in relation to the shaft pointing to the target line behind the ball. You are swinging in and around but look at where your shaft is pointing during the beginning of your swing. It is straight back along your alignment sticks on the target line.
Tom, one of your best (and funniest) lessons, debunking what many of us have been taught for years. My only problem with it is the lack of the Saguto Mutton Chops of old. You going Hollywood with all your success? Stay crispy my friend.
You are really something 😁🤣 love this lesson
AND, if that wasn't enough, you can have more time enjoying that crispy KFC.
Mmm, D licious!
Thanks To Saguto!!! 👍
I was having an issue with taking my club "in" too early…which leads to over the top
My first year in golf I brought the club straight back and my hands were really high and I was way too steep. It caused me to sway instead of making a turn which caused lots of fat and thin shots. I started playing around with my backswing one day and learned that a low inside takeaway fixed everything for me. Now I make much better contact and hit lots of high tight draws. I literally went from the 90’s to mid 70s and low 80s in a day. The guys I play with say it looks weird since they bring the club more straight back. Bringing the club straight back works for some guys but not me. I will keep my inside takeaway. The key is not rolling those forearms with your inside takeaway. Rolling the forearms inside is a death sentence.
I'm stuck got me hahaha
Infomercial or golf swing instruction? Line is blurry 😂😂😂😂👍
Thank you for having the courage to post this content. I recently had the lesson with a pga pro who insisted I bring the club straight back on the backswing. As someone who has had two back surgeries, I immediately felt the tension in my back. When I asked him why he insisted I do this, he showed me a clip of my swing compared to Rory McIlroy and he said, “This is why. Now your positions are almost identical to Rory’s”. I then replied, “I can give two shits about swinging like McIlroy. I’m a 45 year old with two back surgeries and only play once a month if I’m lucky. I just want an easy, repeatable, and effortless golf swing”. Needless to say, I ended the lesson. Additionally, I couldn’t swing a club or work out for three days due to lower back pain.
yes , whoever tells you to take it straight back is completely wrong. Rotational mechanics/swing people . and it starts from the moment the backswing starts.
I don’t know about this, Tom…miserable sad golf feels so natural to me. 😂😂
Ok so no club head outside the hands at P1? now I'm confused.
Can I use this swing with the driver?
Another beauty Tom, but every video you put out this winter gets longer 😆😉
My clubs are just sitting there all depressed.
I’ve been working on S&T for just over a year now. Online lessons with Nick Taylor & TS videos. I’m now starting to feel the benefit of consistent ball striking. I will not be going anywhere else
Nice From ,The Guitar Samurai .Good One Sir Tom!!
Hilarious! I love Tom!
With over 100 videos, how can this be "Simple"?
Pretty confusing…..
Hello Tom, I started learning golf in 2010 and I was captivated by its complexity…it is really my great love, but it has been a very arduous process and a road full of pitfalls, but just as gratifying to see the fruits of the effort. Finally, watching your videos I only have to thank you for those who do not They know the great value of your contribution!
So when people talk about not having an inside takeaway what’s the difference?
Thanks
Tom, you don’t realize how timely this lesson is….It is something that I am currently struggling with as I’ve watched a lot of people say to “cover the hands with the club.” This never felt natural. I think i was looking because I was bringing the hands to low and in and getting a little stuck behind me. But this video makes perfect sense!!! Thanks!!
Love it as always 🙏🏻
ohhh cmon Tom !
no one swing like that !
This tip is gold. Try it and smile.
You had me doing this over a year ago…and it completely changed my game for the better!!
There's a lot of inaccuracies in the world of golf education. Thanks for ferreting this one out and correcting it.
Nice Vid as always, Tom! Life is too short to play "painful" golf…..both mentally and physically. Swing the club IN surely is the most simple way to start the backswing. No need to practice the whole hell of time, it is just what your body builds and allows you to do. Totally agree with you!
I'm a believer, lve seen the results!. Great job Tom 👏 👍
Tom, I have been following you for several years and I’ve gotten much better. Quick question-you talk about the back swing but isn’t it true that the club must move “in” post impact as well. When I hit fat shots I find I need to get more “in” on follow through.
I've been doing this for a while…works great… also exaggerating the inside out path when practicing is key
What a great video, love the direction you're going with your videos. Thanks for great and fun videos dude!
yes. you swing on a perfect arc. and, your swing @3.20 demonstrates this perfectly. you allow your arms to increase separation in the takeaway; and, this is key to taking the club back on the inside. but, from there a player needs to be able to reduce separation by flexing their right arm back, to the top of the backswing. you do this effortlessly; but, this is very difficult for most players. And, it may be that swinging with just the right arm- no club- can help to improve flexion. I have found that I can swing much more on the inside if I allow my manubrium to move away from my thorax; and, when the right arm begins to flex it actually retracts the manubrium away from the thorax. starting my downswing by fully activating the muscle in the left side of my forearm seems to get everything moving in the right direction; which makes me feel more comfortable about swinging back on the inside.
