I've said all along. To get consistantly good at golf you have to use your noggin and not just smash it.👍
I have a habit of just using my irons off the tee, 4 iron goes 210ish, easy to keep straight, may be a longer club in to most holes, but its better from the middle of the fairway than 50 yards further but in the garbage to the left.
It's all about percentages. The higher the better. Even Harvey Pennick preached that for high handicappers. Good stuff Matt
Great tips Matt – Break 100/90 videos are my favourite, as a high handicapper looking to improve technique and shot/course management. Great job!
Excellent video Matt. I've been playing 2,5 years with a small break in the middle after I snapped my ankle. Your videos have helped me break 90 and stay consistent with it. Keep it up!
Unfortunately, I have had a lot of practice with shots in the trees of which I needed to keep the ball low while advancing it forward. I have found that gripping down the club helps, but also using a lesser lofted club (i.e. a 4/5/6 iron) just to get a little bit of rolling distance.
As someone whos not a long hitter. How short becomes too short off the tee? For me to be 'safe' off the tee I think I'd be down at about 180. But then there's still 3 clubs in my bag which go further that just don't have that same confidence in.
It's good to have another "Break 90" vid from you, Matt, but can we get a "Break 80" one, please? Much needed! 😅 Cheers
Great instruction Matt. Thank you
I have seen so many people feel like if they don't hit driver off the tee or don't try the hero shot out of trouble that they are not being manly or that they are wussing out. I also see those same people just compound the problems because of this and end up shooting 8 to 10 strokes higher in their round. They end up irritated with themselves and the game. I hate the term "playing it safe". It makes it seem like it isn't the manly option. I like the term "playing it smart" much better. Makes you look like an idiot when you don't do it.
Always helpful. I just wonder how much I would learn by playing golf with you for just a week.

Wiĺl give these tips a go. Never broken 100 in 30 years. This year is make or break!
I would think another tip is "AVOID THREE PUTTS!!". When I break 90, I am putting well, avoid three putts, and have several one putts in the round.
Confidence building and all simple. Great videos
Totally agree with you Matt, however, as a woman, our hitting distances are well short of what you guys do, so I’m going to give you a challenge, and that’s take the average LPGA distances with each club, and you’re not allowed to hit further than that with said club, and see then how easy it is to break 90. I’d love to see you have a go.
Great vlog Matt – its tips like these that make such a difference to my game.
Any chance you could do a Breaking 80 version?
Cheers
Great video Matt. I used my putter today on a shot where I had about 3 feet of muddy rough to get over before the green started and got the ball to within about 9 inches of the hole. No way I would have been able to do that with a chip.
Rock the Triangle is a great tip
Great video and has given me some things to think about on the course. Just recently got into golf so I'm still finding consistency with clubs an issue but playing smarter shots from trouble and tackling holes in a different manner will hopefully get my score down.
Super. I just came in form the club and actually followed these tips and tada…..scored +9 on our front 9, coming from +15 that's one heck of a difference. Thanks mate, appreciate your vids.
Totally agree about leaving the woods in the bag to hit more fairways and keep out of trouble. My best round 88 was done using 5-LW. Better to guarantee being on the green in 3, instead of trying to be there in 2 and ending up in a bunker.
Matt! All good points on the quest to get a 90 score. It's not the bogey's that I'm worried about, it's the double bogey's. A double bogey requires a birdie to get you back on track to shoot a 90. The same way one has to avoid three putts. My last point. . . . when confronted in the rough with low hanging branches, I will use a five iron "punch shot." If I'm 5 yards off the green, I will either use my hybrid or 5 wood for my shot to the hole. Both have had excellent results! Keep up the good work on your video!!!
Brilliant tips Matt thank you
Great tips on managing the shots to stay out of trouble.
Mostly good tips but if we're being honest the best tip for someone that really wants to get better and break 90 or even 100 would be to go get some lessons from a decent instructor. In my experience, people don't generally improve just from watching YouTube videos… even if they tell themselves they have.
Great tips. Love it. Thx
I shot an 88 in September. It was my last time playing. I hit driver twice.
This is so true Matt. This type of thinking has a lot in common with Course Management. Not every hole calls for Driver. Assess the situation, and choose a club that best fits your game. Thanks for this video as it confirms all that my father would tell me when he first taught me the game.
Some great tips matt. I'm a bit guilty of always pulling out driver even tho the danger isn't worth it. Think I will use youre first tip more and try a hybrid because I know how and where I'm going to hit it most times.
Broke 100 for the 1st time this week so this is my next challenge. See how we get on after taking all this on-board
Some nice tips there
Thanks 🙏
Matt, a great video on game/course management. My best rounds are not when I make birdies (they are damned scarce) but by avoiding +2 and worse. Yep, on some par-4s, you just have to play for a five.
Can we have a break 120 please Matt 😏
Playing to the middle of the green, unless the pin is on the front of the green, helped me make 7 pars in a row yesterday. Ended up shooting an 84. 7 strokes lower than my handicap.
I have been playing golf since around covid before that it was just a handfull times over 30 years. I love playing love your advice keep it up matt also keep beating rick!!!😆it makes my day. I usually play on par 3 nine hole course but last week i played on a 18 hole champ course i shot 10 strokes on the first hole but i did eagle on the 10th (par5 500 yard)and birdie on the ninth (ended with 95 i couldn’t believe it.
4th tip: play a short, par 60 or 62 course.
Thanks Matt, you really helped me with the lesson about playing the club you are most comfortable with,I have used my putter when the proper club would have been a wedge, but because of my confidence in getting it there with the putter I have had some good results getting close to the pin 😎 thanks again plan on watching a lot of your instruction videos and hitting the courses here in Jacksonville Florida we are heading into our beautiful fall – winter – spring seasons 👍👍
Another great video Matt
With my luck I'd be behind the tree trunk
As I was watching this, I was thinking to myself that I can't wait to try this! But then I remembered that I suck at golf so I probably won't break 90 with these tips.
