Utility iron or hybrid or 7-wood? It’s a common question that every golfer faces when trying to find the right golf club to bridge the gap between their irons and fairway woods in the bag. With that said, a utility iron, hybrid, and 7-wood all provide distinct performance differences, despite having similar lofts.

In this video, 2nd Swing’s Drew Mahowald and Taylor Ledwein help golfers with that all important decision of utility iron or hybrid or 7-wood with a Trackman Test. Hopefully, golfers will have a better understanding of which golf club is better for their bag.

  1. If you really take a blank sheet approach to your bag, and especially if you don't need a 4th wedge and go PW/52/58 as an example, then as Taylor points out, it can be very useful to find that cross-over point where you go from hybrid to wood and actually carry both – because that shot is the hardest shot in the bag, and having 2 different tools with different tendencies can be very useful – it's either going to be 5h&9w, 4h&7w or 3h&5w.

  2. Interesting comparison 🙌👍 actually have all 3 (old Adams Dhy 2 iron, TS2 7 wood and TS2 4hy). All fantastic clubs and carry 2 of them at any time in the bag, swapping in and out based on conditions and types of course (links the 7 wood comes out/ long parkland the DHY comes out and dry summer conditions the hybrid makes way). Notch down on the 7 wood and up in the loft on the Hybrid makes a nice gap for me too with closer apex heights of that helps. Well done again.

  3. I use a hybrid. A utility is definitely not for me – too low a flight. A high lofted wood is a possibility, but since the shaft is longer than a utility, maybe not as consistent.

  4. Have found many in the bag has helped me a lot this year. After driver and 3 wood went Apex UW at 19 degrees then 2 Iron P790 UDI and 4 Iron in a P790 as well before my normal iron set. Has helped with gapping, forgiveness and versatility and made my long game a lot better.

  5. I think it comes down to knowing your game, I have 3 hybrids in my bag Ping G410 because I’m super comfortable hitting them being a smaller head than a 7 wood. I play with a lot of different people and the majority of them can’t hit a hybrid for some reason.

  6. Good comparison. Think it depends on they Lie. Which club makes more sense and what kind of shot you are trying to make.

  7. I have the cobra F8 5/6 wood adjusted to 20° , great from the tee and fairway , I do miss a hybrid from the rough though

  8. I have the g425 crossover 3i, and I love it. I also have a RADSpeed 4H and love it as well. I typically only hit the 3i off the tee, and the 4H as a par 5/long par 4 approach club. Each has their own use.

  9. I had a 3 wood, 5 wood, and 4 hybrid. They usually never left my bag because I could never get them off the ground. I switch them out for a mizuno pro fli-hi 3 and 4 iron and I am so happy I did. I can hit them so much better then the woods/hybrids even though I only have a 84 mph swing speed.

  10. I am curious. I know you guys did a video about tee or no tee with irons but what about how these clubs would react with and without a tee between these 3 types of club.

  11. very impressed with Taylor's smash factor for all the clubs tested! 4 hybrid, my "go to" club. 185-195yds. although my smash factor is closer to 1.33

  12. None of these – try the Callaway Apex UW! I’m bagging the 17 and 21 degree UW’s and they are amazing.

  13. 17° or 18° iron. Much more control and don't need any hybrids or woods. I save the extra room for dialed wedges.
