I learned to do the same drill with a kitchen broom from the book “The Three Games of Golf: The Swing, The Shot, The Score” by Hank Johnson. Using the broom greatly exaggerates the swing force and how and where in the swing it will pull the body off balance: the takeaway extension, the downswing just before impact, and the finish extension.
It is no coincidence those are the three points in the swing where you need the butt end of the club pointing back at the body so moving body mass in the opposite direction can keep you in balance over the feet. Because the unbalancing force is so exaggerated by the length of the broom and mass of the broom head the conscious brain realizes “Hey my stance is causing a balance problem” and the reflexive brain figures out by itself how to solve it by bracing the legs and shifting body mass over them in the opposite direction. After learning to stay in balance using the broom for that drill doing it with a golf club which feels feather light by comparison is easy. That drill done every day in the off season improved my ball striking and accuracy better than any other.
A variation of it I use with golfers who swing too far inside in the takeaway is to have them hold the club there horizontally then pull on the club head with the same force of tour takeaway move. It ALWAYS pulls them off their feet. Then I move the club head to the ideal takeaway position where the butt is pointing back at the body as in this drill. AGAIN I will pull them backwards off their feet because they have never felt the club pull in that direction and their reflexes haven’t learned how to counter act a pull in that direction. Put after 3-4 more pulls their reflexive brains figure out how to brace and counter with shifting body mass. I then do the same drill for the finish extension.
The lesson learned and why doing the drill with the broom is so instructive is that at the extensions and impact the club head mass on the ideal swing path WILL pull the body off balance unless the brain learns to anticipate it before it happens and sets up to prevent it, particularly in the downswing when the club head whips down around the hands.
