  1. It really shows how important the short game is. Even if you can pound it, if you can't get it done from 100 yards and in, the length doesn't help, or in this case, moving the tees up.

I find that I play my best when I can avoid the weakest part of my game, which is long irons. My driver, fairway woods, and short game are all pretty decent, but if I need to hit anything longer than a 7-iron for irons, I'm in bad shape, haha.

  2. My golfing buddies and I put 4 coloured tees in a bag (red, yellow, white and black) and what ever colour tee we pick out before a midweek round we all play off. Keeps the course and game fresh to us. Btw we're all low hcp'pers and all under 40yrld so the forward tees arent just for seniors either 😄 – And Matt as your video has proven, short game is everything regardless of course distances 😆👍

  3. Even as a 5 handicap golfer I've started to play from the forward tees to try to get used to the feeling of making birdies so I don't get those birdie putt jitters

  4. Hi Matt, The group that followed you got a free read of the green lol. Yes playing off the forward tees has a bit of a stigma associated with it. My partners in crime and I play off the yellows but I'm not sure there's an even platform as I give them both 11 shots off the REDS! But it's all about the enjoyment not the winning (it is though)

  5. It is much about distance. Playing from red my course has 68 as par. But I shoot 6-8 lower than from yellow. The only thing – it would be allowed doing this in a tournament, but the talking would be ….😢

  6. I’ve always played off the white tees or closest to (6200 yards). I’m now almost 62 years old and one of the new guys in our group only plays off the gold (5700 yards), so we all played from there and it was actually more enjoyable. I still average around 250 total with the driver, so it just feels better to have a pitching wedge instead of a 7 or 8 iron into a green. It’s about 5 shots difference on the index and that’s about where I fall, usually low to mid 80’s. I’m a 15 handicap.

  7. Good watch this. I play off the front as a beginner, then plan to move back once I get some decent scores. Goes to show though, its still a challenge… even for Matt.

  8. This was an interesting video to watch for me .. I am a big fan but at the start it was funny to see the confidence/ arrogance of a pro if u like , to say aiming for -9 ( birdie every hole ) .. yes the holes are a lot shorter but even our pro has to hit the good shots and hole the putts .. I think a lot of players can fail at forward tees cos they either hitting longer irons off the tee or awkward wedge shots that not many people practice enough .. it looked a wake up call to Matt like it should be to everyone

  9. I've seen other YouTubers play from forward tees and they didn't lower their scores as much as you'd think. Playing the holes shorter can often bring more hazards into play. I don't know about that course, but depending on layout and hazards, I'd guess you'd only shoot a bit lower than your usual.

  10. My wife picked up the game this year so if it's just her and I playing, I'll play off the ladies tees with her so it's more social for us. I'm a 2.6 HCP playing from the tips and I find I only shoot a few shots better off the front tees because my game is so geared toward playing the long game.

  11. This video really shows the importance of your short game. Chipping and putting is where so many people add strokes on their scorecards I know I do when I’m playing bad.

  12. You should've turned right around and played that nine again from your usual tees and compared the scores.

  13. Enjoyed the video and the format of using the forward tees. Perhaps courses could prepare more forward tees especially for winter golf and rest the normal tees. Also could you and maybe your fellow YouTube golfers put out a shout asking golfers to repair pitch marks and divots which seem to become the norm in the winter.

  14. Golf is a game of strategy and if you have to hit driver on every hole it's not golf. Drives me crazy to see people play 6500 yards and hit 200 yd drives going an entire round without a GIR!

  15. At my club we have 4 tee locations, "tournament tees", "men's tees", "ladies' tees" and "inbetween tees", which alternate between men's tees and ladies' tees for most of the round, and then there are a few individual holes with dedicated "inbetween tees".
I played a round from the inbetween tees and it was fun to experience the course in a different way. I even made a birdie on the last par 5 and I was happy right up until the "you're playing from the ladies' tee" comment 🙁

  16. Take it easy Matt! The days you play daily the seniors tees are not far away….. Yesterday Bernhard Langer scored a 9 under 62 at the champions tour from back tees, and he is 65 years old! That's very impressive i think! I wish you playing from the white tees even par in his age! Stay well and enjoy your wedge practice hours!

  17. Bryson Dechambeau's coach and other coaches use this to help players gain confidence by shooting low scores.

  18. Don't see any problems playing off the forward tee's but just goes to show that it's not any easier playing off them, keep up the wedge practice Matt.😉

  19. Matt, you mean the white tees play longer than the blue tees? That’s kind of in reverse

  20. I would rather shoot 79 from the members tees, than shoot 85 from the blues, Its just more fun, Never played the ladies tees. But would to work on wedge game.

  21. Good idea Matt and certainly would benefit older players. Please remember we have bunkers in the UK, “traps” are for others…..😂

  22. I have 4 in hcp, this I tell you mostly just to highlight the point that golf is a challenge at all times. I always play from the front tee during the cold winter months. This is because I still want the chance of birdies and pars when the temperature is closer to zero and the ball goes significantly shorter. I think a lot of people would be better golfers if you let go of the prestige of not playing from the "men's" tee always

  23. Where do I apply for my refund Matt🙂 Watched to the end and felt sure you were going to finish in the red, hopefully next time. Keep them coming Matt and more birdies please.

  24. 77 years old took up golf at age 75! with a max drive of 170yardsI decided to play the front tees and enjoy the game so much more .with water on 13 holes on my home course I lose a lot fewer balls
