Hitting the wrong ball is a two stroke penalty in stroke play and loss of hole in match play. If a player hits the wrong ball in golf stroke play then he or she must find original ball and play it from that position. Unfortunately hitting the wrong ball happens more than it should.

This is where it can get ugly. If you hit the wrong ball then chances are you might not know the position of your ball in play. In that case you’d need to do stroke and distance from the last known ball position in addition to the two stroke penalty for playing the wrong ball.

The good news is you can only be assessed two strokes for a lost ball.

Scenario: A player hits his drive on a par 5 into the right rough. He then takes his next shot with the wrong ball, and then 6 more strokes after that. On the next tee he discovers he has hit the wrong ball.

If he tees off he will be disqualified because he doesn’t have a score from the previous hole.

He would then have to go all the way back to find the original ball in the right rough. If he couldn’t find it after 3 minutes, then he would have to go all the way back to the tee and would be hitting 5. Two strokes for the lost ball and two strokes for playing the wrong ball.

Brutal! And imagine the hold up of play.

In match play if both players hit the wrong ball, then the person who hit the wrong ball first loses the hole.
