Never underestimate the value of finding a fairway – even if you have to take a short club to do so. If the driver is giving you trouble and costing you more shots than it’s worth clubbing down can be your salvation. Especially in summer when the fairways are firm.
Never visiting the trees, the sand, out of bounds and that wet stuff can really lower your score.
Give it a go. Spank the Ladyboy.

  1. Got my first albatross in 35 years playing golf on a par 5, wish I had seen it but second shot went over a 🌳and didn't see it

  2. Good video. Can't believe I threw away a really good score today taking 5 off the tee on a par 3 (hole 17 at the Forest of Dean), a 9 was not appreciated I was on 71 after 16 with a HC of 14, the 9 threw me for 18 which I scored a 6 on 18 par 4.. golf… I probably wouldn't have won the comp as I'm hearing rumours of a net 64, but a PB was certainly on the cards of equaling or beating 79 (an 80 would have given a net 66). I should've taken a wedge off the tee rather than my hybrid which I hadn't hit all round. Not the first time that hole has bitten me, won't be the last…

  3. A young fella i know hits it 300m (330yards) but is on a 32 handicap, i would like to just get him out there playing a 6 iron off the tee so he is on the fairway, he is frustrating to play with as the "Bottom Lip drags on the ground" cussing and sulking along the way. He has the potential to easily play off single figures but the "Mind is Mush" (i must smash the ball ) i begged his father to get him golf lessons when he was a lot younger but he told me tennis was the boys future, he gave tennis away 2 years later. Tempo, control and good solid contact will always win the day, plus a hot putter/short game.

  4. Golf is simple. Try to hit the fairway, try to hit the green in regulation, chip and put. I have said this before and I will say it again, I was lucky to get beat up by an older gentleman earlier in my golfing career. He carried 14 clubs but he only used a 7 wood, pw, sw, and putter. Yes, it was boring golf, but it was textbook. He made golf look easy.

  5. Simon, I totally agree. I know we have capabilities to calculate (and that’s all they are – calculations) that show “loner distance” is more important than “fairways hit”but I have to say that I tend to lose more than 0.3 strokes by hitting longer and missing fairways. Even if I’m just in the first rough and significantly longer, I’ll take a fairway every time thank you.

  6. I’m 60 now and my father told me 40 years ago, play for the Bogey and the Pars will come

  7. Nice video Simon! Hitting from fairways make such a big difference in the score. Even if your further back then you like at least your not blocked out or our of bounds.

  8. I broke 90 my last 2 rounds in a row after not breaking 90 for almost a year. I will say my issues are a bit of everything but fairways are huge in reducing scores. What normaly keeps me from breaking 90 is triple or even a quad on the card, normaly both lol. Imagine shooting 94 with a quad and triple on the card, then do it twice a week for a year lol. But normaly that comes from missing the fairway. Lost ball drop 2 hit 3, miss the green, chip on, then 2 or even 3 putt.

  9. The Thai translation is so good. Fitting and with a respectful wink. Awesome example of the useof it Simon. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

  10. Great video! Totally agree. My favorite tee club is my 18 degree hybrid. I hit that plenty far and mistakes with it aren't nearly as punishing.

  11. Excellent advice Simon, to us all!!! This advice isn't just for high handicappers, mid-handicappers like me will also benefit from the reminder, especially given how hard our course is at the moment! And, I've actually sent this in a link to a mate of mine who plays off 12, hits the ball miles but, because it goes so far, often runs into trouble! He would really benefit from learning from this!

Well played as well (we'll forget about the putting!!! But your greens look very slick, so putting is by no means straightforward when that's the case). I'll be jealous of you for the next couple of months as I'm now laid up, with my operation on Wednesday, so I'll look forward to your videos to brighten my life up over the next few weeks!

Final thought. The reason that so many higher handicappers take driver is "monkey see, monkey do!". They watch golf on TV and see the pro's take driver and so…….!!! That's why this message is so important for them!!!!

  12. really enjoyed this video. I am a high handcaper and i know if i can get on a green in 3 and 2 putt im scoring pars. Putting and chipping is the easiest part of the game to practice, you can do it at home! and if you can 2 putt or at worst 3 put your in for 6 maximum whihc would at least be a nett bogey.

  13. Damn, “Spank the Ladyboy” is my new favorite golf saying. Better than “caddie no good “ (sorry BAUS ) and better than “don’t be nasti” ( sorry Manolo)

  14. Hi Hairy I’m 25.5 at the moment. My driver is about 6-7 off the tee. I feel fairly comfortable with it . Took 3wd out of the bag because I was topping it in fairway. On the tee I just wasn’t comfortable with it because of smaller face on head and I knew it would go shorter. So being honest with myself I would try to smash it. Like you said about accepting I’ve made a decision to put priority on hitting fairway (Don’t swing so hard) I will try using 3wd on some tee shots for my next round. See how that goes.
Thank You setting good example how higher handicappers can improve there game.
    Peace Playa

  15. It really does make such a difference on many courses. I can't break 100 if I take driver on every par 4/5, struggle to break 110 to be honest. If I hit 7w off every tee I can break 90! The only thing with playing like this is that you have to get your basics to be very reliable. You need to able to get it on the green with your 3rd shot and you need to avoid 3 putting as much as possible.
The other thing that makes a difference is how far you hit your clubs and that has a huge impact. I hit my driver around 200 yards and on my course that's where all the trouble is. Just taking the 7wood and hitting it 165 keeps me far enough away from the trouble that I can play around or over it and still advance it far enough forward to keep me in the hole.
