The New York Mets have made their first trade ahead of the deadline, acquiring slugger Daniel Vogelbach from the Pirates in exchange for reliever Collin Holderman.

While Holderman has been a great reliever for the Mets this year, host Ryan Finkelstein explains why a bullpen crunch with Trevor May’s imminent return made Holderman expendable as the lone piece required to acquire Vogelbach.

Looking at his overall numbers, fans might not be impressed with Vogelbach, but if he is only used against right-handed pitching, this could be a great add to fill the Mets void at DH.

  1. another horrible trade….worse than the Joely Rodriguez/Miguel Castro trade…..if the Mets needed a .200 hitter, the minor leagues are full of them

  2. Mets fucked up giving away Holderman. Are they that out of touch with the fact that the dudes they have in the bullpen aren’t reliable. Here I am thinking Holderman will get more high leverage situations in the 2nd half, potentially replacing Lugo & they ship him out of town. How about shipping off Lugo or Joely.

  3. I mean yea its an upgrade i guess but meh. Unless they have a trade in place right now including dom this trade doesnt make sense at all…..

  4. There is no justification for this trade. Stop trying. It’s the worst EVER!

  5. Typical Sandy Alderson not understanding what winning takes. Isn't he supposed to be on the business side of things? This is so bad it almost feels intentional.

  6. Do y’all just look at average, he was traded for to bat against righties. If you look at his stats vs righties it’s great plus we will get major bullpen help

  7. Awful trade imo. We need all the relief help we can get and we trade one of our better relief pitchers! The trade gets a Jeff Wilpon grade. Terrible.

  8. Holderman was one of our best relievers so far,…95-97mph heater & sinker gave up 0 homers & controllable! I wanted to see him coming in b4 all our relievers except Diaz & Ottavino.
Rodriquez is horrible…we got fleeced by the Yankees again! Lugo is a crap shoot, Smiths very hittable lately, May coming back is no big deal hes been an under performer since we signed him!
I dont like this trade Vogelbacjh is hitting .214 strikes out frequently is not a great fielder & not quick afoot so hes just another base clogger if he doesnt hit bombs! If we were gunna get rid of Holderman he could have been used in a package for Bell or a lefty reliever 2 things we really need!!! I hope I'm wrong but we will miss Holderman!

  9. I agree the Pirates did well here but Dom Smith's pathetic performance forced the Mets' hand. Eppler said Pirates would only deal Vogelback for Holderman. So I don't blame Eppler for pulling the trigger. If Trevor May arrives back soon then Holderman would have just been an extra luxury in the pen. Now the team needs at least one catcher that can hit.

  10. “Getting on base” in NOT the same as getting hits. These new metrics are way over valued. Nobody standing on second scores when you walk. Nobody with great speed standing on first gets to third or scores when you walk.

  11. Interesting trade🤣 you traded a inexpensive controllable pitcher for a beer league hitter in his declining years who only hits right handers! Do you not have any hitters in your system?

  12. Clearance shopping type move, this offense needs impactful bats that pitchers will fear in the playoffs when pitching only gets better because you're playing much better teams..this is just more dumpster diving when it comes to offense

  13. Bad trades man. This guy. Eppler, on our team or what. First trade Castro for a crappy pitcher, now Holderman who has a live arm and been doing well. No one changing my mind. Could got this guy for less or don't do it. He not the missing piece to put us over the top. Been making very bad trades, don't like it at all

  14. When I was a kid I swore I'd never be that old fart that said…'back in my day…"

    Welp….Kids are stupid.

Back in my day the first stat we looked at on the back of the Topps card to tell whether a player was good or not, was his batting average

It's a straight forward measure that doesn't lie. It laughs in the face of advance metrics because it doesn't give a can of corn It's concerned with one thing only

If you come to bat 1000 times, how many time are you going to get a friggin' hit?

    PERIOD.

No further stats needed…we didn't need to be told Dave Kingman stunk.

We KNEW Dave Kingman stunk. and we didn't need advanced metrics to tell us he was either going yard or just sitting down roughly 800 times out of 1000

Why am I mentioning this? Well I've been thinking about it for a while in general, but something about the way Ryan danced around it here has made me finally say enough is enough

If you ever find yourself looking past this raw honest stat, to justify something else about an offensive guy…you are lying to yourself

    Remember I told you.

  15. You have all these Asian players and African American players down on the farm system and you don't bring them up to play. The Lindor needs to be benched And keep an eye out for rats Cause He and along with the other guys besides Alonzo are not hitting

  16. LOL! They could sign every free agent bat out there and they STILL wouldn't be able to generate any offense. Currently in the process of getting shut out by the Padres AGAIN while the Braves simply can't lose. Good grief.

  17. Vogelbach will be DH vs. right handed pitchers. As stated by the commentator he is hitting .260, 11hrs vs righties with .890 ops. This is much better than what Dom Smith or JD Davis has done this season.
