  1. The diminishing Irons is so true. I am now at retirement age, I also gave up the game for 18 years till my Daughter wanted to start playing a couple of years back. I used have Wilson Staff blades 3 through to SW and a Driver, 5 wood and 7 wood back in the mid 1980s. I can no longer hit a 5 or 6 iron in the current cavity back era. My clubs now are TaylorMade Stealth ladies irons 7 through to 9 and a 46° Pitching Wedge and 54° Sand Wedge. To finish off, a TaylorMade Stealth 5 Fairway Wood, TaylorMade Stealth 5 Hybrid, and a Ping G Le2 Driver 11.5°, and my beloved Odyssey White Hot OG7 Putter. With that set up I have moved from 30 Handicap to 25.4 since I came back. So the modern set up makes a difference.

  2. PS I like the idea of a 3 DHY. Especially as I am already used to this years TaylorMade Stealth Irons. I will tell my fitter.Thank you.

  3. I am better without long Irons. I have had a 22 Handicap round and a 20 for my last two. When I used to average 28 Handicap prior to my fitting.

  4. I can’t tell you how many people routinely hit their 4 iron or maybe even 5 iron shorter than there 6 iron but can’t take the mental leap to take them out of the bag (for a 7 or 9 wood or something) it’s like a set is set and they can’t do it.
I agree 100% with the vid. The vast majority of golfers will hit peak longer distance dispersion/control/confidence at about a 7 iron in irons…. At that point one group is still best with 5 or 6 iron and another with all alternatives…
But it breaks off in any myriad of alternatives from there.

The funny thing for MY game since I ditched long irons is that I have actually moved to blades (P7MC’s – same clubs Colin Morakawa for gods sake) and I’d say I’m Shiite at golf.
    But I’ve never played better.
I actually ditched the driver quite often too.

I play strong loft 13 degree stealth 3 wood (250-260 yds) with control I have never had with Dr.
    5 and 7 wood
    5 hybrid
6-PW P7MC blades (all 1.5 to 2 degrees stronger lofted)
    50/54/58 wedges

All I would suggest is that if you like golf and want to get better. Go get a full golf fitting as until you hit all your clubs with all the myriad of golf shaft technology you just don’t realize everything Average Golfer is saying.
I used to hit in the 90’s. My first round out I hit an 84 and never used driver once that round.
Now it could be that my new enthusiasm for the game has me golfing more so my hitting is vastly better on my strikes – but that’s because the bag feels like it’s supporting MY game…
Not the other way around anymore

  5. Driving irons will always be needed. Hybrids are not great at shaping low shots both ways. 4 iron is basically a 2 iron these days anyway. More bags will start at 5iron in the future. But the Driving iron will still be in there.

  6. My son gave me a ping 28 degree hybrid, and it changed my ability to play. Confidence out of or over anything. 150 yards out anytime.

  7. Andy, I would love to see a video of you chopping down a 3-wood about an inch, about the same length as a 5-wood, and see what that does to the top end of your bag. I just took an inch off of my Tour Edge Exotics 721 3-wood HL, put in a stiff low spin shaft and it is unbelievably easy to hit. And loooong.

  8. I think it will be 5-PW as the norm. I know at 45 I can't hit my Sim 2 max 4 iron to save myself and had to go down the Hybrid route.

  9. My lowest iron in my bag is now a strong lofted 24 degree 6 iron I carry a 3 wood a 2 hybrid and a 4 hybrid I play in Utah where I have wind. I am a 25 handicap but I can hit my two hybrid as a stinger at 190-200 carry and roll forever or the 4 low and into a 180
green in the wind. I don’t think I will ever have a 4 or 5 iron and honestly thought about a 9 wood and taking the 6 iron out. The hybrid have been so good.

  10. It’s interesting:
For “giggles” I decided to get the Callaway Rogue Max OS hybrids 3 to 8…..
    And I love them
I’ve always enjoyed doing things “differently”, and was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed hitting a proper 8 hybrid

Makes you wonder if more companies will go that way in the future

  11. Ping makes hybrids up to 7H or 34 degrees. I've tried their 6H (30 degree) out of a fairway bunker and it was easy. I would have no problem putting their 6H and 7H in my bag and pulling my 7I and 8i. It's not because I can't hit those irons well. I can. It's that the hybrids are that much more forgiving.

  12. The joy of golf for me is flushing long irons, the game will not be the same if you take the need to develop your skills out of the game.

  13. It’s funny the set I got for Christmas was pw-6 and then has 4&5 hybrid 3 wood, driver. So it’s already started

  14. my lowest iron is a 5. One of my more consistent clubs. It is as low as I can go though. I've had 3's and 4's in the bag..junk. 3 Hybrid all day now

  15. As a counter argument to the hybrid, my 4 iron is my favourite club in the bag, always resort to it if I want a 195 yard straight shot

  16. I’m 70 next week and have switch to a ladies callaway driver 11D, good old eBay, it’s an inch shorter which is great for me as a height challenged high handicapper! It doesn’t goes as far as my TM360 but is generally straighter!
