The Lake Travis girls golfers built a 24 shot lead in day one thanks in part to chips like this on 18 by Senior Morgan Lay who followed up a 75 with a 74 on Tuesday. Lauren Comegys opened with a 73 and used chips like this to help her team in day two firing a 77. Junior Kaitlyn Papp had the best round for the Cavaliers with a second round 70 to follow up a 75 for a 145 total. Freshman Sara Camarena also finished with a 145 after shooting 71 and 76 respectively. Kristin Gillman fired a 68 to open up the tournament and then cruised with a 73 in day two for a 141 total to capture the individual title. Gillman who won the 2014 US Women’s Amateur Championship was chased by Westlake Junior Kenney Swann, who backed up a 74 with an impressive final round of 69 to finish two shots behind Gillman for the individual title. Westlake as a team finished second overall for the silver. Jennie Park of Hebron shot an impressive 68 in round two to finish with the bronze individually. Hailee Cooper of Montgomery had one of the best shots of the day with this chip on 18. From just off the fringe and it’s in the hole. That shot would help propel Montgomery to third overall.
So Lake Travis repeats as state champions shooting a 296 in day two for a final score of 580, which was 27 shots ahead of second place Westlake. Let’s hear from Lake Travis co-golf coach Richard Way-Gher and Alabama signee Kristin Gillman about their victories.

The Lake Travis girls golfers built a 24 shot lead in day one and cruised in round two thanks in part to chips like this on 18 by Lady Cavs senior and Texas A&M commit Morgan Lay who followed up a 75 with a 74 on Tuesday. Lauren Comegys opened with a 73 and used chips like this to help her team in day two firing a 77. Lauren is headed to James Madison University. Junior Kaitlyn Papp, who is headed to the University of Texas, had the best round for the Cavaliers with a second round 70 to follow up a 75 for a 145 total. Freshman Sara Camarena also finished with a 145 after shooting 71 and 76 respectively. Kristin Gillman fired a 68 (her season average) to open up the tournament and then cruised with a 73 in day two for a 141 total to capture the individual title.
On the boys side the Plano West Wolves were led by the overall individual winner Travis McInroe, who shot a 71 and 70 respectively. The Baylor commit won an individual TAPPS state title at Prestonwood Christian two years ago, but he would be the first to tell you that an individual title is much better when you have a team title to go with it. Plano West shot a 580 as a team shaving off four strokes from their opening round 291 to finish with a 287 in round two to earn the 6A boys golf state title.

Parker and Pierceson Coody each shot 74s in the opening round and 71s in round two for a 145 total each. If the name Coody sounds familiar it should. Parker and Pierceson learned from their grandfather, who was a former Masters Champion Charles Coody. Andy Lopez shot a 149 total and Bryson Scott finished with a 160 total in two rounds. Both were instrumental in the Wolves finishing first. Rick Hardison, who is the only golf coach in the history of Plano West high school, knew that surviving the windy conditions in round two were key.

The Mansfield Tigers began the day tied with Plano West with 291 team scores after eighteen holes. Luke Davidson and Landon Ernst both shot 71 after day one. Ernst was better in round two by a stroke with a 74 good enough for a fourth place finish overall tied with the Coody twins and Johnny Keefer of San Antonio Johnson. Colin Kober of Southlake Carroll followed up an opening round 71 with a 72 and defeated Caleb Hicks of Lamar in a playoff for second place. Hicks, who shot a 70 in round two, was tied with McInroe for best round of the day though despite finishing third individually.
Westlake’s Trevor Brown shot a 71 in round two to go with his opening round 76 for a 147 total six shots from the individual title. Westlake finished third overall as a team for the bronze medal. Southlake Carroll finished tied for fourth with San Antonio Johnson two strokes out of the medal stand.
