All the time for transference to the course! Especially after the range session from a mat versus hitting from grass – totally agree with developing the skill of hitting good shots at the range
That makes a hell of a lot of sense.

Adam Young's The Practice Manual would be so proud. Several other drills in there to improve skill, coordination, and ultimately strike.
I do a lot of range practice these days and I find for sure that there now exists an entire class of 'golfers' who actually don't play golf but their sport is range golf, which is fine as that's what they do for entertainment etc – and I've learned by helping them that if I just ask them to hit a shot of my choosing, I can get them to make an enormous change to their swing as they get entirely focused on the shot instead of all the perfect 20 things they're supposed to be doing. The secret shot is to get them to hit a very low 30 yard hook that only gets 10 yards off the ground but must start right of the target – once they can do that they can do almost anything. Learning to hit actual shots is what golf is all about.
One of your best instructional videos ever! Like how you think and your sincerity. Thank you Mark.
This is why iv'e been subbed to you for over 8 years now, fantastic video , this should be the most watched golf video on YT, because strike is king, not hitting positions . Bit of a fanboy comment, but i'm being honest. Cheers for posting Mark. Wheres James Diamond now? Chipping sodbury? 😉
This makes so much sense. I've started practicing hitting balls off of a towel (an old one, not my golf towel) as you have to be so precise, like hitting out of a fairway bunker. This video just takes the idea to another level.
This is enlightening! Basically, controlling the low point trumps controlling the center of the face? (Controlling low point is still a weakness for me.)
This makes sense to me. I know what a high toe or thin shot feels like immediately, beyond that I can't tell until I get in near the hosel or the club gets twisted in my hands. At least with my irons. I think I can pick out my strike better with woods and hybrids.
Great vid Mark. What can a novice do at the range to improve consistencey of strike in med-long irons? Just hits lots of balls on a regular basis and develop the skill naturally? Cheers bra
This is the most obvious but true golf vid on the planet😄🙈I had shanks for years then as soon as I actually went the range and got 100 balls and practiced strike instead of massive swing changes I learnt how to toe the ball then slowly found the middle now I can do heel toe and somewhat middle on demand. Madness How I suffered and didn’t do this for years how silly😂🙈
More great practice ideas I'll try to remember when I get to the range. 👍
One of the biggest things I like about your teaching methods is the holistic approach. I wish more teachers, coaches, etc did the same. It’s the way you truly learn, but when you actually learn something (like the ins and outs of the golf swing), the need for an instructor becomes less and less. So instructors always keep a mystique about whatever it is they’re teaching so the students have to rely on them and still continue to pay them.
I can handle ball above my feet just fine. It's the ball below my feet where I have difficulty.
