In the 2nd episode of GolfPlayed Films we visit the small town of Sedgefield. Their local golf course Sedge Links is a little gem with an extremely unique landscape and great members. Sedge Links is so good for golf as it promotes lower barriers to entry in a sport that tends to have extremely high barriers to entry.

Sedge Links is the local golf course. The rolling fairways and testing greens boast a natural setting nestled next to the Swartvlei lake and the Outeniqua mountains in the distance. This short course is the perfect place to feel at peace to concentrate on your short game.

This course is great for the sport as it is encouraging the youth and new golfers to get into golf by breaking down the barriers to entry.

Golf Barriers to Entry:

Golf is a very different sport to most. People tend to not have a visualization of what it looks like. If they’ve never swung or held a golf club before, it doesn’t come naturally. The rules sound complicated and the goal seems difficult. I’m supposed to get it in a cup that small in how many tries?! For many people, golf will remain this mysterious “other” that is not for them.

1. Price

Golf is not cheap to get into. To get into the sport the golf equipment like golf clubs , balls and gloves all add up! There are definitely cheaper and more expensive options but the cheaper options still create a barrier to get into the sport. Now once you are ready to play there are expensive membership and green fees to play at certain golf courses.

2. Skill

Golf is not easy and to be able to get through a round comfortably is not an easy task. Lessons are also expensive and not always accessible so this means lots of driving range sessions and correcting your own mistakes. Rules and pace of play are also extremely important and rely on your skill level. Lots of these are expected of new golfers which puts pressure on new golfers. Handicaps do help this barrier but they have their own problems as well.

3. Expectations

This is such a big barrier that many people struggle to overcome. Pro golfers are pros for a reason and this sport humbles individuals extremely quickly! Expectations need to be managed in order to enjoy the sport.

4. Time

Golf takes up a lot of time. A standard 18 holes of golf can take up to 5 hours to complete! It’s not always easy to make time to get out on the course as well as going to the range.

Knowing you are ready for golf:

– You hit the ball forward most of the time

– You keep up with the pace of play

– You have the ability to hit a good golf shot

– You have someone more experienced to play with

– You are prepared to feel silly

So get into golf because once you overcome these barriers you wont look back!

This is one of the few lifetime sports where you spend time with friends out on the course well chatting and having a good time for a couple hours! It’s also a great way to network and meet new people.

The feeling of hitting a good golf shot or executing a plan is unbeatable. You feel like an artist and this feeling is what gets you back out on the course!

This video dives deeper into these barriers and how golf can change to enable the sport to grow.

We thank Sedge Links Golf Club for having us and making this video possible. It was such an amazing opportunity. This course really opens your eyes to why you started golf and what the sport is all about!
