Let’s start this one off with a quiz (and an answer that will surprise you!):
How many muscles attach to your shoulder blade? Take a wild guess!
Not a crazy amount, but more than you think. Picture everything your arm has to be able to do…reach into a cabinet, overhead for a high-5, into the backseat to grab your bag, throw a ball, swing a golf club, reach down to pet your dog, and reach behind your back to tuck in your shirt.
That’s a lot for your arm!
The shoulder blade is a foundation for all that movement, so it doesn’t move that much – relatively speaking – but it still does move. It goes up, down, forward, backward, and pivots/spins upward and downward… so that’s at least 6 muscles.
Did you know that your spine and ribs also utilize your shoulder blade for support and stability? Holy cow… more muscles. Have you ever noticed how if you have headache or neck tightness that your upper traps feel tight and get knots or trigger points? Guess what that upper trap attaches to? Yep… the shoulder blade.
How many muscles to do all this? Seventeen!!!
Muscle List:
Upper Trapezius, Middle Trapezius, Lower Trapezius, Rhomboid Major, Rhomboid Minor, Levator Scapulae, Serratus Anterior, Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Subscapularis, Teres Minor, Teres Major, Biceps Brachii (long head), Coracobrachialis, Tricep (long head), Pectoralis Minor, Omohyoid (inferior belly)
So what do you think happens when one of those gets injured or stops working efficiently? Thankfully all those other muscles make up for the faulty one and lend a helping hand until the injured muscle heals. Sometimes that can create weird motion (like the shoulder equivalent of a limp) that can lead to something else not feeling so good.
What Physical Therapy does is help identify what’s not working so well, and helps to retrain not only the injured muscle but the whole system. That will get you moving better, feeling better, and back to doing everything you need to do.
