There are very few words that can used to properly describe the exhibition of golf from Leona Maguire.
The Cavan woman spread-eagled a top class LPGA Tour field over 3 rounds to win with a bit to spare.
Tee to green she was utterly sensational. It might seem a bit strange, but she wouldn’t have been flattered with a 6 or 7 shot victory.
This is a day that will go down in Irish sporting history as Leona becomes the first Irish woman to win on the LPGA Tour joining some elite Irish golfing pioneers like Fred Daly & Darren Clarke who were the first to win the Irish Open, a Major & in Clarke’s case, on the PGA Tour.
The run of golf from the 7th hole until the 17th was some of the best striking of a golf ball that you will see.
Even when she hit a rare loose shot, she managed to pull out a shot of magical proportions that resulted in a birdie from next to a tree & propped up on the tricky pine straw.
Her place is written in the annals of Irish Golf & Sport for ever as it stands after her Solheim Cup exploits, but this has brought her to another level.
She moves into 3rd place in the LPGA race to CME Globe, picks up $225,000 for herself, gains automatic entry to the majors & picks up a 2 year exemption, even though I don’t think that will be an issue.
She also gets an entry to next year’s season opener too.
Absolutely incredible stuff & something that cannot be understated.
