For golfers that are able to rotate the hinge in their trail shoulder 90 degrees, vertical hinge action can be easily established. During impact and beyond, the trail arm will only travel on a vertical plane. Your trail wrist must remain flat, as seen with many top speed golf pros, but the wrist most often will not stay vertical. There may not be better golf strategies than applying vertical hinge in clutch situations on the course.
Before the lowest point of our golf swing, me and my golf students observe the palm of our trail hand pointing slightly upwards. Beyond this low point, the trail palm should point downwards.
As vertical hinge differs from horizontal hinge and any other angled hinge action in our swings, me and my golf students ensure that our trail arm fails to move around our body beyond the impact position. We aim to restrict our trail hand, and as a result the clubhead, to continue traveling upon a straight trajectory into the direction of our intended target. Similar to a horizontal hinge swing action, vertical hinge enables your clubhead to trace a circle, but the circle exists on a vertical plane rather than a horizontal plane.
Vertical hinge swing action forces our clubface to hang back without becoming closed. Your clubface will stay square to the target during the entirety of the vertical hinge action, which top speed golf pros utilize for shorter shots when accuracy remains the most important factor of their golf swing, typically in putting or chipping playing situations.
Attempting vertical hinge actions on your full swings most often causes golfers to conflict with the third imperative through steering the club rather than completing their full routine golf swing as intended. Staying in conjunction with the third imperative requires golfers to maintain their clubshaft on a swing plane that forces a laying back motion for the clubface. This swing action allows our trail arm to travel inwards and upwards, which golfers refer to as dual vertical hinge swing action.
