As one of the PGA Tour’s most consistent golfers, the Henrik Stenson swing has been studied by several players interested in applying the same techniques to their own game. Concerning his swing, Stenson believes the worst thing a player can do would be to manipulate the clubface by rolling their wrists during the takeaway.
Henrik believes this results in either closing or opening the clubface, causing the player to compensate with their shoulder rotation in order to bring their swing back on plane. As seen in Henrik Stenson’s golf swing, he allows his arms, hands and upper body to synchronize by implementing effective shoulder rotation.
Me and my golf students often observe players who have trouble with proper shoulder rotation are also the same golfers that fail to gain any distance on their shots. While most casual players start out by trying to generate clubhead speed and gain distance by using their arms to generate the force, this often results in golfers swinging much faster and harder than anyone ever should.
Because golf operate quite differently than any other sport, players will need to focus their efforts on proper shoulder rotation, as doing so will indicate balance, generate power and maintain the ideal swing plane for your golf club. There may not be better golf strategies than focusing some time and effort on improving the rotation in your shoulders. During backswings, a golfer’s shoulders should be turning 90 degrees in the opposite direction of the target.
Players who are executing their shoulder rotation correctly should have a high degree of shoulder tilt evident in their backswing. During backswings, your front shoulder should always be rotating lower than your back shoulder. Such an angle will provide golfers with positioning that points in the direction of the golf ball. This angle will allow players to easily approach their shot at steeper angles, which will send the ball sailing up into the air.
The distance generated by properly rotating your shoulders happens because of the excessive force created by the players while executing this motion. Me and my golf students clearly understand that increased force will mean gains in speed and distance. There may not be better golf strategies than adding speed to your game, as doing so correctly will also assist in lowering your score and creating exciting outings on the golf course.
