What was not in the dark, though, was just how good Michigan looked against the Minnesota Golden Gophers last week, and just how bad Michigan State looked against Rutgers in head coach Mel Tucker’s debut. Sparty struggled mightily, turning the ball over 7 times. Three of those turnovers were credited to Rocky Lombardi, who had a good day on the stat sheet if you erased those errors. He went 31-43 for 319 yards and 3 touchdowns, but the 2 interceptions and the 1 fumble lost definitely cost him team.
Lombardi’s favorite receiver, Jayden Reed, had 11 receptions for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was easily the shining spot in an otherwise abysmal performance out of Michigan State. In the end they lost 38-27, and asking them to bounce back against a 24.5-point favorite in the Michigan Wolverines, might prove to be too tall of a task to take on.
