What’s biting around Tampa Bay and the Gulf in the winter time? Some things you might not expect, and some you would. We talk about popular winter time species and ways to catch ’em. Sheepshead, snook, speckled trout, and hogfish are favorites year round. However, winter time can bring out new opportunities to catch some species while others tend to fade out some. During this year, we are having an extremely mild winter. The weather has not turned noticeably cold for any extended period of time. There are still King Mackerel being caught offshore. Hogfish are biting like crazy, and the sheepshead are often mixed right in with them. Snook fishing has been outstanding due to the warmer temperatures. Usually they find refuges in predictable areas when the water temp drops. Currently they can still be found in spring , summer, and fall areas. Flats and tidal areas instead of deep holes.
