4. THE EQUIPMENT
THE GOLF CLUBS
Golf clubs are used to hit a golf ball.
• Players are only allowed to carry and use 14 clubs
• In addition to the clubs and ball the players normally wear a glove and use tees to elevate the ball for the first shot on the hole.
• Each club is composed of a shaft with a grip at the top end and a club head at the bottom.
LONG CLUBS
‘Long’ clubs are those meant to propel the ball a comparatively longer distance and ‘short’ clubs a comparatively short distance.
• The ‘driver’ is the largest-headed and is the longest club.
• Other woods are slightly shorter but still comparatively large-headed clubs, used for long-distance fairway shots.
SHORT CLUBS
Next, shorter in length are the irons, the most numerous and versatile class used for a wide variety of shots.
HYBRID CLUBS
Hybrid (golf) clubs are increasingly being used because they are easier for the average golfer to use.
PUTTERS
Finally, putters are used to roll the ball across the green into the cup.
THE GOLF BALL
Golf balls are spherical and usually white (although other colours are allowed).
THE TEE
A tee is allowed only for the first stroke on each hole, unless the player must play a provisional stroke or replay their first shot from the tee.
GOLF SHOES
Many golfers wear golf shoes with plastic spikes designed to increase traction, thus allowing for longer and more accurate shots.
GOLF BAG
A golf bag is used to transport golf clubs.
• Golf bags have several pockets designed for carrying equipment and supplies such as tees, balls, and gloves.
• Golf bags can be carried, pulled on cart or carried on a buggy.
