How to Fix an Across the Line Club Position Problem

What is the ‘line’ in the across the line swing error?
– The line here really is the target line and any lines that are parallel to it. So for example, the line between the ball and the target is the target line. And the line formed between the toes of your feet is also ‘the line’ since it is parallel to the target line (at least it is in a square setup position).

What does it mean to be across the line?
– Being across the line simply means that at the top of the swing, the shaft of the club is crossing the target line if a line would run out of the club shaft. It would cross over and is aimed right of the target.

What causes and across the line top of the swing position?
– A golfer with an over swing will typically have an across the line position at the top.
– And a golfer with poor structure of the shoulders and arms might also be in that position. For example, a golfer that fails to keep his left arm straight or one that raises his right shoulder too high during the backswing might suffer from this swing error.

What can happen with an across the line swing?
– The main problem associated with a swing that is across the line is that it will lead to other swing errors, such as coming over the top. Ultimately it can cause you to hit pulls or slices.

How to fix your across the line?
– You need to make sure that you are on-line during the takeaway. And that involves making sure that the shaft of your club shoots straight forward when it is parallel to the ground.
– During the halfway stage of your backswing, when your left arm is parallel to the ground you need to make sure that your hands are behind the target, that your upper body is blocking your hands from viewing the target.
– Finally, at the top, you need to make sure that your club doesn’t cross over to aim right of the target. Note that if you don’t reach the club being parallel to the ground at the top your club should then point slightly up and to the left of the target and not directly at the target, which is fine.
