Darren Fichardt was born in Pretoria, he later attended Sutherland High School in Centurion (where he currently resides). He turned professional in 1994, his first year out of school and attempted to make it on the Tour. His first three years on the Tour were difficult while he finding his way, finishing well out of contention on the Order of Merit. However, his big breakthrough came in 1997 when he won the Bearing Man Highveld Classic, beating South African Sean Pappas by a single stroke. He has played the Sunshine Tour for the last 19 years. In that time he has won 12 events, eight of those wins coming in the last six years. Since joining the Tour he has won the Order of Merit twice (1999/2000 + 2003/2004). He has also competed successfully on the European Tour retaining his card between 2001 and 2007 (including multiple visits to Q-School). He recently finished 18th at the 2011 edition of Q-School to gain playing rights in 2012. Darren travels with his wife, Natasha, who is a trained sports psychologist. He believes that advice given to him by her helped him win undoubtedly the biggest event of his career, the 2003 Qatar Masters, where he beat fellow South African James Kingston in a playoff. Darren has represented South Africa at the WGC? World Cup alongside Retief Goosen in 2000. He lists the biggest moment of his life as the date was when he met his wife and later had their first child.
