I have been playing disc golf consistently for most of 2020 up to current, but had a knee surgery during that time that made me take a few months off. I threw basically all forehand prior to my knee surgery since my torn ACL in my right knee couldn’t handle a backhand throw without my knee giving out. I’ve been back at it now for a few months post surgery and have basically been throwing all backhand so I could actually use my right knee and try to improve my distance. My forehand used to be my main strength, but in order to be good at disc golf, you HAVE to have a solid backhand throw. I’ve got a long way to go!

I recorded my drives yesterday at Red Mountain park so I could see what the heck I was doing. I’m throwing between 300 and 350 consistently, but I really would like to add another 50′ or more to my drives. I can see in my video that although I’m using my right knee to plant and start my pivot when I throw, I barely put any of my weight onto it and don’t really transfer any of my momentum onto the lead right leg. I noticed in the freeze frames that I’m almost sitting upright as if on a chair while I pull the disc through the ‘box’ across my chest. That’s no bueno! My knee still hurts a lot and I have a hard time putting weight on that right leg when it’s in a half squatted position, which happens to be the position it needs to be in when throwing a backhand drive. So I know that plays a huge part in my form and why it’s so bad, but I need to get over it. I need to get that strength back in my quads so I can throw with correct form and get that extra distance.

Give the video a look and please, comment below any criticism and tips and advice you have for me. Thanks for watching and enjoy!
