Can’t bring your best practice game over to the course? This is THE biggest problem in golf. You would think by looking at all the ads aimed at golfers that everyone’s swing is totally screwed up and that you get bonus points for hitting a golf ball 5 yards longer. All you have to do to disprove this nonsense is go down to your local muni course and play a few rounds and sooner or later you will be paired up with a senior golfer who hits it straight down the middle 200 yards with a crooked back and funky swing and yet, he shoots in the 70’s.
So what’s the shortcut secret to bringing your practice game over to the course?
Change your reason for playing golf!
What? You heard me. You see, for most golfers, the reason they play the game is for a score. Therefore, they filter everything that happens to them on the course through that purpose. Meaning, on the course, they’re worried they will have a bad shot, they think it will hurt their score and so they feel bad and go into a tense state. And of course, tension is the biggest reason for having bad shots! It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Golfers don’t have this mental train of thought on the range and so they don’t tense up there and thus, have a better, more fluid swing. This is so simple to fix and yet golfers blow thousands on new clubs that will absolutely NOTHING for their score and ignore what I’m telling you. Don’t be one of those!
So if you aren’t playing the game for a score, then what do you play the game for?
What you want to do is to change your reason, at the cellular level, to all the reasons you love the game that have nothing to do with score….and then FOCUS on that while you play!
I love the sound of a ball going in the cup…The feel of a ball struck right in the sweet spot. The outdoors, my buddies, wild animals, cross-hatched fairways, the challenge of reading a green, my body exploding on a drive, the smell of grass, etc etc. Get it!?
If you put your entire mental energy on these things while you play, you will ward off nervousness and tension…and Whoops, sorry about this…but your score will go down as a result!
