A statement originally made famous by the late, great Arnold Palmer, the notion of “SWING YOUR SWING” is an attractive and popular one for the majority of amateur golfers.

The problem, for most golfers, is their swing is not producing good shots, so persevering with a small tweak of their current action is unlikely to yield the desired improvement in ball striking and consistency. So the tinkering and tweaking simply leads to a vicious cycle of frustration – “try this tip, works for a while, stops working, try something else”.

The idea that “we’re all unique” and therefore our golf swing can also be, is misleading as there are rules and fundamentals that the golf swing must conform to in order to be functional. On top of this, the idea that the best golf swings are so different, is also misleading – they are far more SIMILAR than they are DIFFERENT and if the golfing masses learned the basic motions first, they would be much better for it.

The GOLFTEC SwingTru study is the most comprehensive fact-based swing study ever conducted. They discovered that the major movement patterns of golfers were more similar, than different, and that the way a person moved was actually directly correlated to their handicap or skill level.

The Stack&Tilt 10 WORD template also recognises the similarities in terms of how the best players move. WEIGHT FORWARD, SHOULDER DOWN, ARMS STRAIGHT, HANDS IN, and TUCK HIPS are universally performed by all the best ball strikers throughout the entire history of the game!

You can choose to focus on the DIFFERENCES that make swings look unique, or you can choose to focus on the SIMILARITIES that connect the best players and copy what they do. I’ll let you decide what’s best for your game and your development.
