Is there any reason to use a different lofted club, besides a sand wedge, when hitting out of a greenside bunker? Maria Palozola, one of the Top 50 LPGA Instructors in the world, answers this question in the video. Maria explains that if the sand is wet or hard, using a sand wedge can actually be more difficult because of the bounce built into the club. The bounce is very helpful for soft sand and for poor lies in the grass as it keeps your club from digging and getting caught. However, when the sand is hard or wet, you don’t want to your club to bounce off the hard ground as it would result in the leading edge hitting high into the bull and skulling the shot. Therefore, it makes sense to choose a club with less loft such as a lob wedge or a pitching wedge. Choose between the two based on the length of the shot.
