How to gain more distance and power in the golf swing
One of the main request I get in a coaching session is “I would like to hit the golf further” which is a fair request and achievable but you have to know which areas you need to attack to achieve more distance in the most efficient way. So welcome to markameygolf, if you haven’t subscribed already then please smash that subscribe button, ring the bell, comment below and give us a good thumbs up. Now that’s out the way lets go through how to gain some power.
Number 1
There are 4 main power sources –
1- Vertical Jump Power
2- Rotary Power
3- Chop Power
4 – Wrist Release Power
Now before you dive into those areas, there is a combo of is there any injuries or restriction in mobility and stability which can be done with a TPI Screen, please click the link below to check that out. So for this we are going to be injury free
TPI Physical Golf Screen – Fix your golf swing
So were injury free, next point is how is the swing technique looking where any parts of the swing which is causing a loss of distance and our the 4 main power sources in action.
Now this can always definitely be improved, there is always going room for improvements in rotation, more efficient use of the ground and loading of the wrist. But before we attack that on this occasion we are going to do a power test.
Now if you asked for more distance and we are, injury free, working on mobility / stability and gradually making those swing improvements, then we need to know what engine we have under the hood. What power can you produce and what is the strongest and weakest department.
We have 4 Tests –
1 – Seated Chest Pass (Upper Body – chest and triceps)
2 – Sit Up and Throw Test (Abs and lat power)
3 – Vertical Jump Test (overall leg and core power – including leg thrust)
4 – Baseline Toss Test (overall body power and the ability to generate energy from the ground, transfer it through their body and deliver into their arms)
Now ideally the first three test should be exactly the same numbers. If one test is much lower than the other two, it is the weakest link.
Right the main things we need for global testing is a 4kg medicine ball for gents or a 2kg medicine ball for ladies, a seat and a measuring device.
COSTING £20 – £25
Right here are my results so I am weakest, in that department………. and I need to improve my power overall. As you can see in the screen now this is the results from players being tested at TPI ……. and this is the chart which is a Ball Speed Guess Chart showing you where you roughly need to be able to produce a certain ball speed.
So gaining distance is a combo of the whole package but if you can make those some gains in each department over a period of time you will definitely start seeing some really big results. But there has to be a starting point, if you see numbers changing it makes a whole difference to your mind set on what your trying to achieve.
